Substitute Policy

The following conditions must be met before a student teacher will be permitted to substitute teach for pay:

  • The decision of a student teacher's readiness to assume substitute teaching duty must be unanimous among the student teacher, university faculty member or supervisor, cooperating teacher, and campus principal. However, the student teacher has the final decision as to whether he/she would like to substitute teach when requested to do so.
  • The student is only allowed to substitute teach for the cooperating teacher(s) to whom he/she is assigned during the student teaching assignment.
  • The rate of substitute pay for the student teacher will be equivalent to the rate of pay for a regularly assigned substitute teacher employed by the school district.
  • The student teacher must complete all required paperwork and produce all necessary documents prior to receiving a substitute assignment. The student teacher may express interest in becoming a substitute by e-mailing the district substitute office at sub_web@roundrockisd.org.

Substituting must also adhere to the following program conditions:

  • Student teachers may be permitted to substitute only after the mid-term point of the semester for a few days.
  • Interns are not permitted to substitute.  However, special permission may be granted through Dr. Sharon Evans, Director of Education Services.

Substituting after completion of the student teaching assignment:

Once the student teacher has completed the required number of weeks in his/her student teaching assignment satisfactorily, the student teacher may serve as a substitute teacher on a full-time basis, as needed by the school district, throughout the remainder of the semester of the school year. However, the student teacher must receive an "active status" notification from the substitute office prior to accepting any regular substitute assignments.
