Conclusion and Further Notes - JJ
In conclusion, I believe I was able to successfully design and prototype a six-bar window mechanism. Not only was the assembly functioning, but I was also able to achieve a motor-driven assembly using the cordless power drill. The materials and tools provided during the project also aided in the prototyping process. The materials were easy to acquire and the laser cutter allowed for quick fabrication of links and the support base.
Although I was able to make a working prototype, I believe there is room for improvement. The kinematic analysis using Matlab must be debugged in order to obtain a higher level of accuracy. Since I had issues determining the closed and open-loop configuration, additional research on that specific topic may result in an improved Matlab simulation. In addition, the prototype itself could have some improvements in design considerations. The sliding portion of the sliding link and pin in slot need some improvements. I believe that adding lubricants or additional linear bearings may improve the linear actuation. In addition, it may be beneficial to utilize a more compact electronics package. For instance, I could have used an Arduino microcontroller and a DC motor to power the entire assembly. This would eliminate the need to carry a cordless drill and would improve the portability of the assembly. Finally, additional tolerances may improve the performance of my prototype as I had some issues with clearance between certain links, resulting in increased friction.
