Satisfactory Progress, Academic Probation and Academic Dismissal

• Satisfactory Progress
  On an annual basis, Graduate Studies Committees are responsible for evaluating the students in their programs to ensure that they are making satisfactory progress toward a degree. If the Graduate Studies Committee finds that a student is not making satisfactory progress, it may recommend to

  the 

  the Dean of the Graduate School

   that

   that the student’s program be terminated.

  For students in ELP programs, to be qualified as making “satisfactory progress” towards their degree, students must pass all milestones as outlined by the program and department. In addition, to be qualified as making "satisfactory progress,” ELP students muststudents must:

  • Not receive a grade below a B- in any course

  • Maintain an overall 3.0 GPA

  • Not receive more than 1 incomplete in any course.

  • Maintain continuous enrollment in the department through graduation (

    which means

    which means enrolling in in fall and spring long semesters.) The only exceptions are

    for approved

  • Maintain the expected level of enrollment (i.e., full time) as determined by

    the program

  In addition, for doctoral students who are at the dissertation or treatise phase of their studies, in order to be qualified as “making satisfactory progress,” students are expected to follow the guidance of their dissertation or treatise supervisor with regards to the content, writing, revisions, and timeline of their dissertation or treatise proposal, and also of their final dissertation or treatise.
  
  

• Academic Probation
  A student whose cumulative GPA drops below 3.0 is placed on scholastic probation by the University. Students will be notified of their scholastic status by the University and program staff. The University grants students a grace period of one long semester to raise their cumulative GPA to the required 3.0 in order to remain in their program.
  
  

• Dismissal
  Students who are deemed as not making satisfactory progress are subject to dismissal by the department. In  In addition, the University automatically dismisses students who are on scholastic probation for two long semesters. Dismissed students may be readmitted only by direct petition to the Dean of the Graduate School. Students who have been dismissed will not be granted additional financial aid.
