Cooperating teachers and field supervisors of student teachers are required by State law to complete mentor training within the first three weeks of the student teachers' placements.

This online training module has been designed for cooperating teachers and field supervisors who will work with preservice teachers at The University of Texas at Austin during their field placements. Materials are based on the Coaching with Care model; they reflect an emphasis on reflective practice, teacher growth, and evaluation based on student feedback. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • The content is intended to be self-paced and should take approximately 90 minutes to complete. Some sections include brief reflective assessments at their conclusion.
  • Select “Next Section” to enter the site and then select “Begin” when you are ready to start a new section. 
  • Advance within each section by simply clicking the orange navigation panel at the bottom or top of the page depending on which which direction you want to move.
  • In order to receive a completion on the training, you must submit responses to the reflective questions located at the end of sections 1 (Vision for Coaching), 3 (CT Roles), 11 (Observations), 12 (Post-Conferences), and 14 (Attending to the 3 Cs). The section 1 reflective question can be found after the Longhorn Creed.  
  • Once you have entered your responses to the reflective questions in a particular section, please be sure to use the submit button before advancing to the next section.  If you do not use the submit button, your responses will not be saved.
  • If you leave and re-enter the site before finishing the training, the navigation panel starts back at 0% completion.  Just start back where you left off. There’s no need to re-submit responses to reflective questions already submitted.
  • This training will take approximately 90 minutes.

  • Once you’ve completed a section, you may have reflective questions to complete before being able to advance to the next section. 
  • If you need to complete the training in smaller chunks of time, your web browser will save your place. Sessions close after a week, so be sure to finish within seven days after starting.

The interactive graphic in section 4 (Strategies to Make Practice Visible) takes you through the following modules:

  • Shadowing (Section 5)
  • Purposeful Observations (Section 6)        
  • Co-Teaching (Section 7)

While going through each section, use the “Go Back” orange button to return to the interactive graphic in section 4.  Once you have completed all of these sections, use the panel at the bottom of the page to advance to section 8.

The interactive graphic in section 9 (Overview of the CARE Coaching Cycle) takes you through the following modules:

  • Pre-Conferences (Section 10)
  • Observations (Section 11)
  • Post-Conference (Section 12)
  • Planning (Section 13)

While going through each section, use the “Go Back” orange button to return to the interactive graphic in section 9.  Once you have completed all of these sections, use the panel at the bottom of the page to advance to section 14.
