Qualifying

...

Exam

The Department recommends PhD students take the qualifying exam at the

...

conclusion of their first year of

...

doctoral studies. Key points:

  • The qualifying exam committee must

...

  • consist of at least three faculty members, including

...

  • the student's PhD advisor.
  • There are no requirements regarding the number of committee members from outside the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC).
  • The qualifying exam is an oral examination with a Pass/Fail

...

  • outcome.
  • Upon successful completion of the qualifying exam,

...

  • students should submit:
    1. An abstract of

...

    1. their PhD dissertation

...

    1. A potential dissertation title

...

    1. These documents are necessary to apply for PhD candidacy

Comprehensive Exam

The Department recommends PhD students take the comprehensive exam at least one year prior to their dissertation defense, ideally during their third year of study. Important details:

  • The comprehensive exam committee is identical to the PhD defense committee.
  • The PhD defense committee must comprise at least four faculty members, with a minimum of one member from outside the CAEE Graduate Studies Committee (GSC).
  • Format of the comprehensive exam:
    1. Students deliver a 50-minute presentation.
    2. Students must submit a written document (sample chapters) to the committee at least one week before the exam date.
  • The comprehensive exam is not a Pass/Fail assessment. Instead, it serves as an opportunity for students to receive feedback from the committee prior to the final defense.
  • Conducting the comprehensive exam approximately one year before the defense provides ample time for students to incorporate committee feedback.
