The Department of Educational Psychology offers Teaching Assistant (TA), Assistant Instructor (AI), and Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions. These positions are primarily available to EDP students in their second year and beyond. Recipients of half-time teaching or research assistantships are typically often eligible for an exemption of the out-of-state portion of their tuition.

Student appointments as TAs, AIs, or GRAs may not exceed 20 hours per week during the first two long semesters ("long semester" = Spring or Fall) of graduate study (or for international students in any semester) at UT Austin. Appointments may not exceed 30 hours per week during subsequent long semesters. Exceptions to this policy require approval of the EDP Graduate Adviser and the Graduate Dean. Summer session TA/AI appointments are commensurate with the level of assigned duties and may be up to full-time

TAs, AIs, & GRAs may not be appointed for more than fourteen long semesters at any one of these graduate student employee titles or combination of titles. Graduate student employees must also be registered for at least 9 semester graduate hours during the semester of employment for a long semester, and at least 3 semester graduate hours during a summer term employment.

For 2016-2017, a 10-hour Teaching Assistant appointment yields a salary of $3,237 for one long semester ($719/month). A 10-hour Assistant Instructor position yields a salary of $3,578 for one long semester ($795/month). Appointments are always for one semester at a time. Note: In addition to appointments available in our departmentEDP, EDP students have also found employment in other UT departments. Note that appointment as an AI requires that students have completed the course 398T College Teaching Methodology (in Educational Psychology or in another department).
