  • UT has strict rules about the number of hours a week a student may be employed, as well as the number of credit hours a student must be enrolled in, to qualify for student employment. Carefully review all the Office of Graduate Studies' Conditions for Student Employment
  • TAs and AIs must have taken the same course or an approved equivalent, and be recommended by the course instructor.
  • For ALD 320 and ALD 328 TAs, preference is given to students who have teaching experience at the elementary or secondary level.
  • AI Appointment requires students to have completed the course 398T College Teaching Methodology (in Educational Psychology or in another department).
  • Students complete any UT/Graduate-School required student employee orientations before beginning work assignment. 

Position Types

Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)s are expected to contribute, under supervision, to a program of departmental or interdepartmental research, with the understanding that the experience will contribute to the professional training of the student. A GRA may carry out independent research under the guidance of a faculty member, and their work may be used as part of their report, thesis, or dissertation research to the extent approved by the faculty supervisor. Teaching Assistants (TA)s generally assist with labs, review sessions, grading, and classroom management. TAs are not permitted by the university to be primary instructor for a course. More information about TA assignments >

Assistant Instructors (AI)s serve as the primary instructor and instructor of record for the course, handling all instruction, grading, and classroom activities. They are assigned a faculty supervisor, who evaluates the student at the end of the semester, provides guidance when needed, and steps in to manage the course in case of emergency. GRA: Students interested in a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) position should read about faculty research interests and contact faculty directly. 

TA Positions: Students interested in a Teaching Assistant or Assistant Instructor positions are encouraged to talk to the instructor of the course should contact the course instructor directly, or complete the general-interest application below. Class listings /schedules for upcoming semesters can be viewed via the Course Schedule on the Registrar's page. 

AI Positions: Students should contact the HDCLS Area Chair for information about EDP 304 and EDP 316 AI positions, and QM Area Chair for information about EDP 308 AI positions.
