For those new to the SoA or simply as a reminder for our current students, faculty and staff, the SOA shop enacted operational changes after UT’s Environmental Health and Safety department instituted a mandatory on-line safety training program for all University shops. It is supplemental to the SOA’s current training and as a result, all students, faculty and staff who wish to use the SOA shop tools and equipment must now take and pass both EHS’s and the SoA’s training courses. If you are a faculty member whose class is a shop user, this information should be included on your syllabus, although students will be notified via email (and in person at the door of the shop, if necessary).

Those who have successfully passed EHS's on-line training session and The Build Lab's "Level 1" training can access the shop during normal operating hours by simply swiping their UT ID cards at the door. Our training teaches fundamental knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment. It is offered in the three levels described below:
- Environmental Health and Safety's on-line training (one of two sessions required to access Build Lab): Emphasizes University-wide policies and practices. Contains many informative videos.
- Level 1 Site Specific Training(the second of two sessions required to access Build Lab): Taught by the Build Lab Manager, John Vehko, at the beginning of each semester in studio-sized groups of 15 or more. Email John Vehko for days and times of upcoming sessions.
- Level 2 Site Specific Training (Required to use the heavier equipment) Taught by the Build Lab Manager, John Vehko, as needed, in groups of six or more. Email John Vehko for days and times of upcoming sessions.

Follow this link to EHS’s training site but PLEASE NOTE that you may have to manually enter “0040000” in the department unit code (see Fig. 1, below) if it is blank or has a different number. If you do not do this we will be unable to verify that you’ve completed their training.

The SoA’s training differs from EHS’s in that it is hands-on, specific to our tools and equipment and, as such, incorporates lessons learned from past use. Contact John Vehko to arrange training sessions for your class or group, which will be held as needed for groups of six or larger.

EHS is also stepping up efforts to educate students, faculty and staff of UT’s shop safety rules. A copy of their flier is attached for your use. Some of these will be new to past users of the shop, so please take time to carefully read and heed it in the future.
