This Wiki page covers the change with the CMHC Internal referral process so that the appropriate Disposition can be selected in a note rather than having to go into that complicated referral menu.
For example, when you select the Disposition for "*REFERRED: CMHC PSYCHIATRY", this goes directly to the team rather than having to fill out a form. Referrals using Dispositions has worked well for counselors, but we noticed two things to improve and expedite scheduling of students:

  1. Discharge button:  We discovered that the Disposition does NOT go through to where the psychiatry nurse can see the referral until a note is signed and locked. This means if you refer a student but don't finish your note right away, or for trainees you have some back-and-forth with your supervisor, the referral doesn't go through until everything is finished. Instead of having your student wait, you can use the Discharge button at the top of a note, which immediately pushes your Disposition to be visible as a referral.
We haven't really used the Discharge button at CMHC before (UHS uses it a lot), so attached is a picture of what it looks like.

    1. You are not required to use the Discharge button for every note or referral, especially if you are going to sign it that same day.
    2. It is recommended that you use the Discharge button when you are making a referral to Psychiatry or UHS services and you need more time to complete your note. That way the referral goes through while you finish the note.
    3. If you are under supervision - it is recommended you always use the Discharge button when you make a referral to Psychiatry or UHS, that way the referral goes through while you are waiting for your supervisor to review the note (also a reminder, always consult with your supervisor before making a referral). This is because your signature does not lock the note, so the Disposition referral doesn't go through until your supervisor signs.
  1. Comments:  A quick reminder that it is critical to always include a comment with the Disposition to help with the referral process (especially if your note isn't done yet). For example, when referring to psychiatry or UHS for medication include something brief like "Eval for depression and OCD, some history of SI". Only the Comment box inside the Disposition menu is visible to scheduling staff to make sure to use that one (picture attached).
  2. Urgent Care:  If you are referring a student to Urgent Care, this is not something that gets scheduled, this is a walk-in clinic. If you select this Disposition no one at UHS is alerted, so you need to have your student go directly down to Urgent Care or call the Nurse Advice Line.
