Graduate Costume Tech Student use of the costume shop

  • One student per cutting table. Everyone to face the front of the room. No one should be facing each other.
  • Each student will have a designated sewing machine, either at their cutting table or at a sewing table
  • Irons and sergers will be assigned to groups of 3 students. You should only use the equipment you are assigned to.
  • All shared equipment should be sanitized by the last person to used it
  • Everyone is responsible for sanitizing their own work space & their own equipment.
  • There is brown paper to recover your table as needed.
  • All students will need to have their own supplies & tools. NO SHARING OF TOOLS!Students will need to plan how they want to work (from home or in the shop)
  • UT Tools and equipment need to stay in the costume shop
  • Students will have only one dress form assigned to them
  • Students are use the designated grad kitchen area ONLY to avoid hallway congestion
  • Students should come up with meal schedules that works best for them.
  • Students should not share dish-ware or utensils

Shop Care

  • Trash will be collected & left outside the costume shop for disposal nightly
  • Custodial will clean the Costume Shop on Friday evenings
  • This is a professional work environment. Please be respectful about the noise you make.  People are trying to concentrate.
  • Use trays when you eat at your table space
  • Keep the sink area clean- Graduate student kitchen area is your responsibility 
  • Recycling- all goes in the general recycling bins even though they may say “paper”
  • Sharps boxes are located around the shop- dispose of any broken/damaged needles, pins, razors, etc.
  • Shared machines (serger, hemmer, etc.) 
    •  Disinfectant will be provided for cleaning
    • Everyone is responsible for sanitizing after use
  • Report any machine or shop issues IMMEDIATELY to staff.
  • Use of Dress forms will be assigned and cannot be shared. 

Costume Shop Fitting Rooms

  • The Pilates Studio will be the designated fitting room and meeting room for Costume Technology student projects if needed.
  • Visitors will not be allowed in the Costume Shop. Meetings should be scheduled to take place in the Pilates Studio and only with those directly involved. Follow the distancing guidelines. Masks are required.
  • The google calendar will be used to reserve this room. There will also be a dry erase board in the shop for easy reference. Put your reservations in both. The google calendar will be the official calendar.
  • Select your time, put in your name and contact info and assign it to the FITTING/MEETING ROOM Reservation calendar

Craft Room, Supplies, & Tools

  • For your safety, Dye Room use is by appointment only.
    • This is to ensure there is time for cleaning in between uses and to avoid more than one person at a time being in the space.
    • More than one person is allowed if you have a project partner you feel comfortable working within the space.
    • We can discuss if any training is needed for use of supplies and equipment The google calendar will be used to reserve this room. Select your time, put in your name and contact info and assign it to the DYE ROOM Reservation calendar.
  • Please wear a mask (when not wearing a respirator) even if there is no one else in the room and the door is closed.
    • We want to avoid a potential accumulation of virus in the air in this enclosed space
    • There are no guarantees the ventilation system is adequate at removing the virus. It was not intended for that use.
  • You must have been fit tested for a respirator in order to dye or use toxic products
  • Always keep the room locked

  • Normally, annual fit testing is required and a medical questionnaire must be filled out every 3 years.
  • Due to Covid-19, the Occupational Health Program is limiting their time in the  office and will only fit test those who have never been tested before and have not fit testing anyone unless they have a critical need to use a respirator daily. We do not fall into that category
  • They request any task requiring use of a respirator be passed on to someone who has been fit tested in lieu of fit testing new employees for occasional respirator use.
  • Please try to use nontoxic alternatives whenever possible to avoid the need for a respirator. If you have any questions, feel free to email Tanya (tolalde@austin.utexas.edu)
  • If you absolutely need to use a respirator and have not been fit tested, please email Tanya and she can try to get you a fit test appointment.
