At this point in your doctoral studies as you near the completion of your PhD degree, you are an official doctoral candidate, having completed both have been working with a committee that was approved by the ECE GSC and registering for the Dissertation course, having advanced to doctoral candidacy after completing the Candidacy Evaluation process (first), and having conducted the Progress Review with your whole committee in attendance (second) in separate, prior semesters. You and your supervisor have determined you are ready to write your dissertation and conduct your defense with your whole committee in attendance. Note that you must accumulate at least 6 or more hours of Dissertation course credits, including the hours of Dissertation you take in the final semester of defense, in order to graduate with your PhD degree.
