Overview

The Remote Desktop Gateway (RDG) allows compatible clients to securely access Windows computers on campus using the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) remotely without connecting to the UT Virtual Private Network (VPN).  The RDG does require two-factor authentication with Duo.

Both RDG and VPN allow for external access to campus resources, the key difference is the RDG reduces the scope of access to the host(s) required while VPN connects the remote client directly to the UT network.  This reduction in scope dramatically limits the exposure of the UT network from potentially comprised remote clients limiting the exposure to the host(s).

Connecting to the Remote Desktop Gateway

Customers can configure compatible Remote Desktop clients to use the gateway at rdg.austin.utexas.edu by following the guides below. Please note that the RDG requires both EID authentication and two-factor authentication (2FA) with Duo. Due to limitations with Duo integration for the RDG, customers must have a default device configured in the Duo registration portal. Once a customer is authenticated to the RDG, they may authenticate to the Windows desktop using non-EID credentials such as department AD accounts.

Client configuration

Configuration guides for various clients are available and listed below.

ACTION REQUIRED

Customers that wish to leverage the RDG must have a default device (smart phone, landline, SMS text message) defined with Duo to complete the second factor authentication as passcodes are not supported by the Duo for RD Gateway software.
