Costume Studio Events & File Sharing

Safety & Security

Winship Building Access

  • Front Doors are unlocked M-F 8am-5pm. All other doors are by proximity access only.

  • Winship is CLOSED and ALARMED from 2am-6am. NO ONE IS ALLOWED IN THE BUILDING DURING THESE HOURS. Call UT Police if leaving after the doors are alarmed.

  • During regular hours, DO NOT leave doors propped open. They will trigger an alarm.

  • To use the loading dock garage door, you must call UT police at (512) 471-4441 then press 9 for a non-emergency operator.

Winship Emergency Plan

  • Link above includes IMPORTANT evacuation and shelter in place info.

  • Know your EXIT options! Studio exit is the East Stairwell.

  • Primary Assembly area is 23rd Street Circle, Secondary Assembly is North of SAC.

Costume Studio General Info (Studio Access)

Studio hours are M-F 9am-6pm

Keys- DO NOT LOAN YOUR KEYS TO ANYONE!!!

  • Costume Designer and Costume Technician key rings are available for checkout from Nanette. You will keep these keys for your 3 years

  • If you need additional keys, key slips are issued by the building manager: David Thomases

  • Provide him with the rooms/facilities you need access to and your EID. He will notify you when your key slip is available. Pick up keys at Lock & Keys (see map on their site for hours & location).

  • Keys to limited access costume areas are in the lock box for check out in the staff office.

Studio Safety & Studio Shutdown

  • If you are working after hours, alone, or with only a few other people, please lock the studio doors

    for safety.
  • The Studio is a shared workspace for Costume shop staff and students. Classes are also held in the space.
    • It is a good idea to hide or secure your valuables if left unattended. Things have gone missing in the past.
    • Graduate and undergraduate costume students are assigned drawers for extra storage space.
  • Last person to leave should turn off irons & lights, close doors, and lock outer doors.
  • UT Tools and equipment need to stay in the costume studio

Studio Care 

  • This is a professional work environment. Please be conscious of the noise level you are contributing to the shop. If you want to listen to music or watch a movie, please use ear buds/headphones
  • WE strongly encourage you to take an outside lunch break. We strongly recommend everyone to remain masked as much as possible in the shop. If you cannot go outside, please use trays when you eat at your table space
  • Keep the sink area clean. Do your dishes, don't keep food lingering for too long, etc. Graduate student sink area is your responsibility.
  • Shared machines (serger, hemmer, etc.) 
    •  keep area clean
    • Report any machine or shop issues IMMEDIATELY to staff, including staff machines that you may use after hours

Sustainability Initiatives/Disposal of Items

  • Fabric Scraps
    • Small scraps of any material that would otherwise be thrown in the trash
    • No yardage means nothing over 36"
    • Specialized to our space only
    • Bins found at ground level below the Thread bay
  • Recycling
    • Glass, aluminum, paper/cardboard, hard plastics with any # in the triangle
    • A good rule to remember is, "No soft plastics, no Styrofoam, nothing smaller than your fist" in Recycling.
    • Bins are found paired with Trash cans around the Studio and Winship
  • Soft Plastics Recycling
    • Plastic envelopes, delivery bags, grocery bags, ziplock, garment bags, plastic film
    • Specialized to our space only
    • Bin (large, circular grey, labeled "Plastic Only") found across the Dye Room near the Packing Area
  • Compost
    • Food waste, including meat/bones/dairy, paper towels/napkins, pizza boxes, compostable containers (marked with a triangle and "PLA" underneath)
    • Specialized to our space only
    • Small Bin located near fridge by staff offices (dumped weekly)
  • Landfill
    • Coated cardboard, used tissues, used masks, plastic utensils, items smaller than your fist that can't be recycled
    • Bins are found paired with Recycling cans around the Studio and Winship
  • Sharps Disposal
    • broken/damaged needles, pins, razors, scissors, etc.
    • red boxes are located around the studio.
  • Hazardous Disposal
    • Please see Tanya Olalde (Crafts Supervisor) for information on hazardous disposal

Studio Supplies

  • Dress forms- take good care of them & report any problems
  • Supply Drawers:
  • Supplies are not for personal or class project use, unless it is for production
    • Do not keep supplies at your table. Put things back for everyone's use
    • If you cannot find something, ask a staff member
    • If you use the last of something or open the last from overstock, inform a staff person IMMEDIATELY
  • Fabric Stock
    • If there are at least two UNCUT yards of fabric, it can be stored on a bolt.
    • All fabric should be secured with ties or calamari loops.
    • Smaller amounts of scrap fabric should be neatly bundled, tied off, and put in the scrap drawers.
    • There is a blue basket by the double doors to put unusable/discarded scraps for recycling
  • Commercial Patterns are available for use. They are located in the back hallway

Costume Labeling

  • Label Guidelines & Supplies
    • Printed labels, label ribbons, and oak tags are located by the trims drawers
    • Dry cleaning pens are for label use only
    • Use a pencil or friction pen on oak tags please!

Craft Room, Supplies, & Tools

  • The craft room is not a workspace. If you need to use an item or tool that is in the room, ask permission to use the item and to get access to the space.
  • Most craft supplies are located in grey cabinets in the hallway.  Everything is labeled
  • Some supplies and tools are locked up for safe keeping.  Ask Tanya if you cannot find something you need.

Dye Room

  • For your safety, Dye Room use is by appointment only.
    • We can discuss if any training is needed for use of supplies and equipment 
  • You must have been fit tested for a respirator in order to dye or use toxic products
  • Always keep the room locked 
  • Please clean up before you leave. Thank you.

Respirator Fit Testing

  • Graduate and Undergraduate Student Employees

  • The Costume Shop will arrange for medical assessments and fit testing through UT’s Occupational Health Program.
  • Medical evaluations are reassessed every 3 years and fit testing is repeated annually. See “Respirator Medical Assessment and Fit Testing” document for more info.
  • Graduate student employees are highly advised to purchase their own respirators and cartridges
  • Undergraduate student employees required to have respirators will have respirators and cartridges supplied by the department

    .

  • For safety reasons, Undergraduate students are not allowed to work alone in the studio. They must be accompanied by their TA, a Graduate Student, Faculty, or Staff.

  • The last person to leave the studio should follow Shutdown Procedures:

    • Make sure all irons are properly turned off and unplugged (see Irons section below)

    • Turn off all lights (see light switches/fuse box info below)

    • Lock all outer doors. (Main double doors and side door)

  • If you are the last one to leave the front of the shop, please follow the same shutdown procedure.Staff working in other areas are unable to monitor the main studio.

Main Studio Spaces (2.170) - Care & Supplies

 

The Studio is a shared professional workspace

  • Please keep quiet especially during class times. Students, please use headphones for media.

  • TA’s, please be aware of the noise level of your students.

Classroom Area

  • Classroom tables are a shared workspace ONLY when class is not in session.

    • If working in this area outside of class time, please clean & clear the tables after use.

    • TA’s, please make sure tables are clean after classes.

  • Shared Machines (including any staff machines if you have permission to use them after hours)

Graduate Costume Tech Spaces

  • Kitchen: sink/dining area is your responsibility to maintain and keep clean.

  • Graduate Costume Tech Storage Cubbies- are your responsibility to manage.

  • Graduate Costume Tech Student Worktables- are your responsibility to manage.

  • Location of Recycling/Landfill Bins & Sharps Disposal (see Sustainability initiatives/Disposal)

Notion Supply Wall/Drawers (Supplies are for production use ONLY)

  • Please do not keep supplies at your table. Take what you need and return to drawer.

  • If you use the last of something, or open the last from overstock, inform staff IMMEDIATELY. Write it on the “Supplies Needed” clipboard AND Email costumestaff@utlists.utexas.edu

Irons

  • How to turn the irons on/off

    • Turn ON: Switch iron on, wait for 10 minutes and then open steam valve ¼-½ of a turn. 

    • Turn OFF: Turn off steam valve, press button to release steam until you no longer see any steam, switch off and unplug iron!

  • Iron care

    • Please see staff if there are any issues

    • Notify staff immediately when you notice the iron is building up with residue

    • Water/Filters: Add water from faucets or filtered water from drinking fountain as needed to steam jugs. If you want to treat the algae that grows, scrub bottle and clean all filter layers with a 1:3 vinegar/water soak and put back carefully. (Performed each semester). No need to change iron resin beads, they get switched out each semester by staff.

Fitting Rooms (Small and Large)

  • Priority use of the fitting rooms is for production or class use during class hours.

  • For any other use, please email costumestaff@utlists.utexas.edu to request time.

Light Switches & Fuse Box

  • These switches control the front half of the studio lights.

  • Fuse Box: Only turn ON/OFF light fuses when necessary. Look for RED. Only turn off/on switches labeled in RED. Leave the rest alone please.

314M/324P TA Class Supplies

  • TA’s are responsible for keeping these drawers organized.

  • Supplies in this area are NOT communal and strictly for 314M and 324P classes.

  • Ask staff for any additional supplies needed. Do not store studio production supplies here.

Assigned Student Drawers

  • All costume students are assigned a drawer to store personal items or projects. If you don’t have one, but believe you should, see a staff member.

  • Things can go missing around here so keep your personal belongings locked up or hidden away.

Staff Area

  • Costume Labeling Drawer- Please follow labeling guidelines and use appropriate supplies.

  • Location of Fabric Recycling (see Sustainability initiatives/Disposal)

  • Crew Rack

    • Do not put anything on this cart without draper knowledge/permission (Poua & Sarah).

    • TA’s see 324P TA’s and Draper/Tailor Expectations document for more details.

    • All unauthorized items will be tossed or restocked.

  • Staff Tables, Machines, & Irons

    • For use by Staff, Guest Drapers, Guest Stitchers

    • Please ask Staff for permission to use.

  • Cubbies- For production use only. Some are for staff, production fabric, and stock storage.

  • Light Switches- switches are for the staff half of the studio lights

  • Large Fitting Room- see “Fitting Rooms” info above

  • Dress Form Storage (accessible during the day, locked at night and on weekends)

    • Dress forms must be checked out and checked back in when returned.

    • Before using, you must read the Dress Form Use and Care guidelines

Re-Stock Hallway

(located between the main studio & freight elevator bay/middle hallway)

  •   Items to be restocked can be placed here. Will be restocked by Stock student employees

  • Do not put an entire show’s worth of items to be restocked here.

  • Please remove any safety pins and remove from show hangers before returning things to stock

  • A note about class projects: Every year there are beautiful works made in classes. They are sometimes left in stock. While we appreciate your craft, please do not assume we want to keep it in stock. Please ask costume staff before restocking any personal projects. Stock has very limited space.

 

Freight Elevator Bay/Middle Hallway (2.220)

Elevator Bay

This is a production storage space and a shared workspace. Please clean & clear area after use.

  • Grommet Setter, Grinder, Tool Battery Recharge Station, Paper Cutter, Walking Foot Machine, and Designer/guest workspace are located here.

Designer/guest workspace

  • Computer is for designer/ guest use. Anyone with a log in can add you to the computer.

  • Costume Studio printer (WIN Staff Minolta C224e) can be accessed from here. Printing is for production use only!

  • Some craft supplies and tools are stored in the gray cabinets. Some supplies and tools are locked up for safekeeping. Ask Tanya if you cannot find a craft tool or craft supplies you need.

  • Freight Elevator- limit individual use during busy times. Must have a key to travel up to our floor.

Middle Hallway

Frequently used Costume Stock Items stored here.

  • The area along the dye room wall is occasionally a show staging area.

  • Shipping Station – mostly used by project managers and their assistants.

  • Soft Plastics Recycling (see Sustainability initiatives/Disposal for more info)

  • Sanitizing Dryer – Used to sanitize costumes. Ask Staff for use.

Laundry Area (2.220)

  • Laundry Backstock- hand towels, detergent, dryer sheets, stain treatments, etc.

  • Laundry is identified using magnetic signage displaying the project title. To avoid laundry loss, ensure signage follows items from machines to baskets.

    • “This Laundry Belongs To” signage is available for your project. Please write your name using a dry erase maker.

  • Washing Machines

    • Please read all signs before using, ask staff if you need help.

    • Please process laundry in a timely manner. Do not leave things in the machines overnight.

  • Dryers

    • Check the lint trap before use. The key is on a chain to the left of the machines.

    • Please do not leave items in dryers overnight. Please put items away.

  • Dye Room- email Tanya to schedule use or training. Must be fit tested for a respirator to use.

 

Back Hallway (2.3 Corridor)

 

  • Costume Studio Directory- includes costume stock, tools, and supplies

  • Patrick Shaw’s Office (2.304) (Playwriting/Directing)

Kitchen Area

  • Shared space, please clean up any mess/spills immediately

  • Refrigerator, Microwave, Toaster Oven, & storage cabinets are for communal use.

    • Please label everything with your name and a date using masking tape & sharpie.

    • Fridge clean outs happen periodically, reminder emails will be sent out.

Fabric Stock

  • Guidelines for use are posted. PLEASE CLOSE DRAWERS ALL THE WAY.

 Main Costume Stock (Basement)

  • Supervised by Desiree “Dezi” Humphries

  • Limited access area. Key available for checkout in lock box . Mask wearing strongly encouraged.

Who can use Costume Stock?

  • Graduate Costume Design students (and their assistants) will have access to pull items for main stage productions as needed.

  • Graduate Costume Tech Students needing to borrow items for Draping and Tailoring projects.

  • Grad and Undergrad costume Students participating in production outside of the Theatre and Dance Dept need to email and arrange a contract and rental sheet. While an appointment is not needed, we strongly encourage you to arrange a time during stock hours to get assistance

  • While an appointment is not necessary all items taken out of stock for outside projects must be documented. Please be advised using the costume stock for outside projects is a privilege

  • All others must make an appointment.

Costume Restock

  • Costumes that were worn for shows or projects must be washed and/or sanitized before restocking.

  • Shows are struck by student workers, wardrobe, or studio staff.

  • Personal projects are restocked or placed on the restock racks in basement or studio.

    • Please remove any safety pins and remove from show hangers before returning things to stock

What if there’s a class project and a friend really wants to borrow something?

They must make an appointment. Please do not lend out your keys.

What about non-costume faculty?

Faculty can inquire about borrowing costumes in advance by emailing Dezi.
