Instructions for setting up How to login to the static HTML webserver: echo
Request a new Static HTML site

As an iSchool Faculty member, you already have the necessary permissions to login to the static HTML webserver (echo.ischool.utexas.edu) and upload your .html files. Your site will become active when you first login and upload files.

Request a new static HTML site

  • Email help@ischool.utexas.edu with a request for a new static html faculty website.

  • The Commons team will create a new repository at https://github.austin.utexas.edu for you.

  • We will grant access to you and any contributors you specify.

  • A placeholder faculty profile will be in the /public directory.

Test changes before publishing

  • If you create a ‘test’ branch in your repository, all content in the /public directory of your test branch will be automatically published to https://pages-test.ischool.utexas.edu

Your new faculty Web host can be accessed with your UT EID and password. If you have any trouble accessing the resource, please email help@ischool.utexase.edu.

  • Server Name or Host Name = echo.ischool.utexas.edu
  • Login Name = UT EID
  • Login Passoword = UT EID Password
  • Protocols Supported = SFTP, SSH, SCP [port=22]

Logging into echo.ischool.utexas.edu requires that you either be located on campus or use the VPN.  Login to the VPN.

In order to connect to your portfolio account, you'll need to utilize some SSH/SFTP software. Here are examples of tools that will enable you to access echo.ischool.utexas.edu using the server (sometimes called hostname) above (echo.ischool.utexas.edu) and your login credentials (eid and password).

Your Web Directory

Within your echo.ischool.utexas.edu home directory (i.e. the location that you will be in once you login), you should see a folder called public_html, and a file called index.html. Index.html is the page that shows when you visit https://ischool.utexas.edu/~youreid

Login to your account space on echo using the information provided above (i.e. hostname, your eid, your password, port number).  Example below is using Filezilla

At this point, your Web-enabled account should be active and your site will be accessible at https://ischool.utexas.edu/~youreid as soon as you upload your Web content to it.

  • If you upload additional files to the public_html folder, you may need to change the permissions of each file to 755, so they can be accessed on the web.  To edit permission for the folder and all files in a folder, right click the file and edit permissions to 755. Additionally, apply changes to all files and directories.
