Overview
Available to Assistant Professors who were in rank during academic years 2020-21 and/or 2021-22. Assistant Professors hired in or after fall 2022 are not eligible for the COVID-related probationary extension. tenure-track faculty who meet both of the following conditions:
a) One of their probationary years include AY 2019-20, AY 2020-21, or AY 2021-22, AND
b) Were hired on or before May 31, 2022
An Extension of the Probationary Period for COVID-Related Impact is available to tenure-track faculty, which allows the probationary period to be extended for one year due to the negative impact of COVID-19. In addition, the probationary period may be extended because of personal circumstances such as disability or illness of the faculty member; status of the faculty member as the principal caregiver of a preschool-aged child; or status of the faculty member as a principal caregiver of a disabled, elderly, or ill member of the family of the faculty member.
An approved extension for COVID-related reasons is not counted in the maximum two extensions due to personal circumstances permitted by the university.
A request for probationary period extension associated with COVID-19 must be made no later than the end of the spring semester (May 31) before the faculty member's required tenure review year. For example, if 2021-22 is a faculty member's final year of probationary period before they must be reviewed for tenure, then the extension request must be submitted by May 31, 2021.
An approved extension may later be rescinded in writing before it takes effect.
Probationary Period Extensions will display in the "Biographical" tab of the Faculty Profile (restricted access), with the academic year to which it applies.
For general information about the probationary period, see COE: Probationary Period - Tenure-Track Faculty.
