Goals for getting involved
Project description - focus on authors and faculty advisors for dissertations from Mechanical Engineering
What they have done so far
Consideration when drafting application profiles - what entities to create entries for? What properties to include? What properties should be core? Reviewed existing application profiles from Stanford and Guidelines for WIkiProject Books on recommended properties.
Properties of interest to Scholarly Communications: Year, Gender, Academic subject/disc, etc.
Uploading metadata from their repository OakTrust to Wikidata
Screenshots of Wikidata schema in OpenRefine, Schema tab
Example of Wikidata items batch created or enhanced via OpenRefine
Lessons Learned: plenty of existing metadata for use in automation; think it is ok to put embargoed titles on Wikidata; batch create items first before adding statements to link them
Next steps: test how this can work in practice; explore other tools provided by Wikidata Institute; design and carry our queries
Subjects? using "Mechanical Engineering" when batch uploading all. Reconciling various terms in existing metadata in OpenRefine takes too long.
Linking to Wikidata from repository records? Not yet, but going the other way, from Wikidata to repository
Presentation: PCC Wikidata pilot project at TSU
Mary, Nicole, Amanda
TSU has 4 different projects.
Why they chose to participate
Initial Setup - presenting on Wikidata, demonstrating creation of record to gain interest and buy-in
Faculty authority work
moving towards reliance on unique identifiers as opposed to detailed names; reassessing effort put into NACO (NACO-lite) records
Preparatory steps for Faculty Authors
Increasing visibility for faculty mentioned in campus news
Progress on faculty pages: 84 out of 100 record target - potential good capstone project for student?
University Archives Oral History Project - why oral histories, notability
uses "has work in collection" and "archives at" properties for connection to oral history collection
Starting points: surveyed what was already in Wikipedia/Wikidata, and collected links, looked at Stanford project for ideas
Compiling data, starting with master oral history spreadsheet - minimums vs. how far to go with research/gathering?
Bulk entry tools: Quickstatements and OpenRefine, mentions of pros and cons, learning curve is there but enabled participation in project
Examples of brand new and enhanced existing Wikidata records
Looking forward: how to assess impact? Reflections on value
Wittliff Archives Collections - adding "archives at" statements for subjects
Example of enhancement of existing Wikidata page
Researching adding images to WIkiCommons to use in Wikidata
Links may change on finding aids
As of mid-March: nearly 300 edits of 68 articles
Google search of name + "archives" consistently brings Wittliff archives as top hits
Digital Collections Journals - five journals currently published in IR
Goal is to add or enhance records in Wikidata - Done
Further avenues: adding citations to Wikidata, Assessment of Wikidata, Developing best practices, Editing in Wikipedia, Addressing questions of sustainability
Resources shared
Q/A
Citations in Wikidata would be selected publications? How to choose which to include? Author priority over editor status.
Profile for citations? Can we see examples? Guidelines for WikiBooks helpful on this.
Presentation: PCC Wikidata pilot project at HRC
Paloma
Sharing what their project will be once up and running - demonstrating their project page on Wikidata
Opportunity to demonstrate value of Linked Data for organization by linking Wikidata entities to finding aids.
Allyssa Anderson capstone student's recent work/presentation demonstrated process, possibilities, and increased visibility of HRC collections.
Currently developing best practices, quality control metrics, and project questions, ideas and further research (e.g. how many and what properties exist to link to a specific item in a GLAM institution?) for their pilot.
Discussing questions around appropriate use/protocols for using "archives at" property - ok for partial archives?
Exploring possibility of creating Wikidata elements for RBMS/MARC 510 field citations - similar to Yale project idea, to get special collections more visible
