ItemWhoNotes
Presentation: PCC Wikidata pilot project at TAMUJeannette

Goals for getting involved

Project description - focus on authors and faculty advisors for dissertations from Mechanical Engineering

What they have done so far

Consideration when drafting application profiles - what entities to create entries for? What properties to include? What properties should be core? Reviewed existing application profiles from Stanford and Guidelines for WIkiProject Books on recommended properties.

Properties of interest to Scholarly Communications: Year, Gender, Academic subject/disc, etc.

Uploading metadata from their repository OakTrust to Wikidata

Screenshots of Wikidata schema in OpenRefine, Schema tab

Example of Wikidata items batch created or enhanced via OpenRefine

Lessons Learned: plenty of existing metadata for use in automation; think it is ok to put embargoed titles on Wikidata; batch create items first before adding statements to link them

Next steps: test how this can work in practice; explore other tools provided by Wikidata Institute; design and carry our queries

Q/A - jaho@library.tamu.edu

  • Subjects? using "Mechanical Engineering" when batch uploading all. Reconciling various terms in existing metadata in OpenRefine takes too long.
  • Linking to Wikidata from repository records? Not yet, but going the other way, from Wikidata to repository
