The official End of support date for Windows XP is April 8th, 2014, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/end-of-support.aspx

If there is a technical need to continue running Windows XP, please refrain from placing an XP system on the network (wired or wireless)

Users can take one of the following actions:

  • Continue using the computer with Windows XP without a network connection
  • Replace the computer with an updated and supported version of Windows, OSX, or linux
  • Upgrade the existing computer to Windows 7 if the computer meets the minimum requirements

 


Upgrading to Windows 

Note: Upgrades must be clean upgrades (machine is formatted).  ECE-IT will assist with data migration (if possible), but cannot migrate applications

Requirements

  1. Check that the computer is capable of running Windows 7

    4. See your manufacturers support site to see if they have drivers for Windows 7
  2. Make sure your software will work in Windows 7
  3. Make sure you have installers (CD's, downloads etc) and licenses (serial numbers, license files, etc) for your software
  4. Make a note of where data is installed on the computer

Getting the Upgrade

  1. Contact the ECE helpdesk at help@ece.utexas.edu to arrange a time when the system can be dropped off.
  2. Bring in the computer and show helpdesk staff all data that needs to be migrated
  3. Helpdesk staff will backup the entire system, install Windows 7, and move data back on to the computer

After the Upgrade

  1. Verify data is on the machine
  2. Verify you have all needed accounts on the system
