The Update Experience
Similar to Windows and Office updates, updates for third party software will be scheduled for installation. These updates tend to have minimal impact and are often not noticed by a user especially if the application is not open. However, if the application to be updated is in conflict (i.e., The application is in use) there will be a notice such as the one below giving the option to close the application and install the update or to snooze (defer) the installation.
The installation of the update can be deferred for 4 days. If no action is taken (e.g., You're away from your desk) after 5 minutes, the installation will be auto deferred.
This prompt will be repeated once a day until the installation can no longer be deferred. When that happens the only option left is to close and update the software.
The cycle explained
The Patch My PC catalog is updated once a week on Sunday at 11am. Tuesday at 11am the ADR for 3rd Party - Include will add the new updates to the Software Update Group. Updates will show up as available in Software Center beginning on Tuesday and on Thursday at 11am the deadline is met and they will install if the application is closed. If the application is open, the deferral schedule of prompting once per day will begin. The deferral period ends on Monday and if the application is still open it will be closed and updated.
