A complete team consists of 6 players, 3 men and 3 women. There may be any number of players on the roster. A player may play for only 1 water volleyball team.
If injuries reduce a team to 4 players or less, the game may continue with staff approval.
A team reduced to 4 players or less via player ejections will automatically forfeit.
A team may play with a minimum of 5 players. Legal teams include the following:
MALES | FEMALES |
3 | 3 |
3 | 2 |
2 | 4 |
2 | 3 |
1 | 5 |

Uniforms and Equipment
Players must wear swimwear appropriate for the Gregory Aquatic Complex.
Any apparel or equipment deemed to be dangerous by the Intramural Staff must be removed.
No Show
Teams not ready to play within 5 minutes after the scheduled starting time (not when the preceding game finishes) will receive a no show loss.
Below is a summary of penalties for a team that is late:
Game Time = opposing team will get choice of side and serve.
5 minutes late = automatic loss of set.
Note: If neither team is ready to play by the scheduled game time, and it is less than 5 minutes past the scheduled start time, the teams will be permitted to play. The first team that arrives will get choice of side and serve.
Line Ups
All players that participate in a game must be listed on the GAME SUMMARY SHEET and on the LINE UP.
The LINE UP is the list of players in serving order. Teams must submit their LINE UP at least 5 minutes before game time. First initial and last name are required on the LINE UP.
The LINE UP must rotate male/female or female/male.
Substitutions
All substitutes must report to the scorekeeper before entering the game.
Teams may substitute any number of players on THEIR OWN SERVE.
More than 2 players may share a serving spot, but only one player sharing each serving spot may play at one time.
Once a player has entered the game in a serving spot they may not re-enter in a different serving spot.
Serving
A coin flip will determine who serves first.
Teams must serve in the proper order listed on the LINE UP.
Teams playing with 3 men/2 women will lose one point (but not the serve) when male players serve back to back.
The server may serve from any in-bound position where they are able to touch the back boundary line.
The server must call out “Serve” or “Ready” or announce the score prior to serving.
The ball must be contacted with one hand on the serve – underhand, side arm, or overhead. The ball may not be thrown or hit with two hands.
Let serves are legal.
The serve may not be attacked or blocked.
Playing rules
There are no restrictions on alignment or the placement of players.
Teams have 3 hits to play the ball over the net.
The back boundary, net poles, pool sides, and deck are out of bounds.
Players may not jump off of the step on the side of the pool.
Players may not contact the net with any part of their body or clothing.
Scoring
Teams will play games to 25 in pool play, with a cap at 30.
Teams will call their own points. The Intramural Staff will determine if points will be awarded on a disputed call or if the point will be replayed.
The Intramural Staff on duty will have final authority on all rules and disputed calls.
