Helper Meeting

Adia Dawn, LSSP

  • Controlling Play

    • Roleplay healthy dynamics with puppets/social stories

    • Channel the child’s need to be productive - give them an individualized job

    • Group times to build community

    • Do all the children have the same understanding of expectations for the game?

    • Structured script use - play out a book you read together

  • Gendered Play (Construction dramatic play center used for different things by gender with no crossover)

    • Both groups are interested in world building, but boys are more interested in control

    • Creating world building opportunities outside of free play

    • Idea for a small group with collaborative building - each person gets to take turns adding a block

    • There is power in observing and active commentary/reflecting. Point out children’s strengths for friends to overhear

    • Reinforce how their strength contributes to the community

    • Create documentation with pictures of them and their contributions

  • Sensory Input Boundaries

    • Children needing connection and/or sensory input

    • Undergrads need help holding boundaries/teachers need to redirect for them

    • You are making an age appropriate demand of the child

    • Framing it as the child’s goals with undergrads

    • Remind undergrads you aren’t being “mean” when you say no - clear is kind

    • Whisper teach with adults to empower them

    • If it’s connection that the child needs, offer a hug before you set physical boundaries to acknowledge that need

  • Persistence and follow through

    • Remember the power and importance in reinforcing a child’s decision

    • Create a play plan with your children before you go outside

    • Parents can help reinforce reminders on the way to school - what are 2-3 of the most important things they can remind them?
