Clinics like KidVentures can conduct a free phone screening to assess the child’s readiness for OT. It is better to refer children and then have parents decide their child’s needs through conversations with providers. Are you documenting what you are seeing and bringing it to Amy or the team so that we can analyze concrete examples together and decide what the child needs? Collecting data can help us understand if it is a pattern or a fluke that is influenced by outside environmental factors Parents need concrete examples and to be informed so they can go into OT open minded and understand that functionally something is effecting their child’s participation Praxis difficulties impacts social participation Can cause avoidance or withdrawing from play (observe others play instead of joining). They may attempt to control and be possessive of preferred toys, centers, peers, adults Dysregulation may result from this process which may lead to aggression, which others may internalize Significantly impacts the development of resilience and self-concept
What can we do? Co-regulate Incorporate calming/organizing activities in routine Give external support and cueing Provide options and opportunities Plan ahead Make a referral Reflect on the pyramid of learning and decide if it something you can support on an individual or whole-class level Collaborate with team. Trial your ideas for at least a month, consistently documenting and collection data If the student is still not successful or seems dysregulated, it might be time for a referral
