Wiring Quality Assurance & Control (QAC)

Follow all steps below or the Solar Car goes Kaboom

Micro-Fit 3.0 Crimping QAC:

  1. Are you using the right crimp for the right wire?
    1. Ex: 20-24 awg crimp should NOT be used with a 12 gauge wire
    2. **You can get away with 18 gauge and 20-24 awg crimp but if we have the 18 gauge crimp just don’t do that
  2. Did you strip the correct length for the wire?
    1. Should be 2.54-2.92mm
  3. Is the border between wire and insulation between the two slots of the crimp?
  4. Are the wings of the crimp damaged in any way?
    1. Should be around 45 degrees pointing ownwards
  5. Hold the crimp and give it a tug, if it feels like it will come out or if it does come out please recrimp it using a new crimp.
  6. Double check if it is right length/right location to plug into connector
  7. Plug it in, if it clicks your good. If it doesn’t and you can pull it out, RESTART
  8. Give slight tug after and if no breakage or loosening occurs you’re all done :)
  9. PS: cause our crimpers are scuffed, do not use the 20 gauge crimper as it is missing the crimp holder. Instead use the 18 gauge molex crimper to attach the crimp onto the wire and then use the 20 gauge crimper to give it a tight fit.

*Note: do not be afraid to restart a crimp, rather lose 10 good crimps than have a faulty wire in the car.

Good crimps should look like the above

Crimping Miscellaneous crimps ie: quick disconnect crimps,

  1. Reread the Molex Microfit QAC above
  2. Did you use the right tool for the job? It will be different from the Molex Crimpers but if it is the correct gauge and type you are good
  3. Does it click into the disconnect?
  4. Stress test it: give it a good tug from the quick disconnect: if it gets out RESTART the crimp

Low Gauge Wire:

  1. O-Ring Crimp/Anderson SB crimps: USE THE HYDRAULIC CRIMPER (in the yellow box)
