Discussion items

ItemWhoNotes
IntroductionsEverybody
Revaluation of the chargeJessica/Melanie/Abby/Katie
  • We can all review and members can send comments/feedback to Katie or Jessica - or make a comment directly to this meeting notes page
  • Melanie's feedback on the charge is that the broadness accommodates the flexibility and evolving nature of the group. It might be useful to add a little language about expectations for the group so that people don't contact the group ("activities of this group are driven by the needs of the participants" to make clear that it isn't a group that provides defined services for the campus")
  • Abby: we don't have the resources at the ready to provide those services, we represent different perspectives on campus "the opinions and activities of this groups reflect the professional interests of the group, but do not reflect the opinions or responsibilities of our organizations." If we are going to outline what we are not, it is important to include just as much language about what we can provide and the kind of activities we participate in.
  • Examples of activities over the last 3 years
  • Katie: Have more than one version to accommodate appropriate length for different communications
  • When we have a revised charge/charter, we need to put it on the abstract or description of the group in sympa
Break out sessionsEverybody
  • Abby - likes the ISO standard but mabye next year
  • Melanie - symposium planning (December) and the ISO standards reading (November) sound good and seem timely with the work that's going on
  • ACTION ITEM: scan the hallcross and send out the pdf with reminder
Sympoisum
  • Hold around preservation week
  • Get people signed up for their area by December meeting so we can hit the ground running in January when everyone returns:
  • audiences: IT/staff, community, faculty, students
  • ACTION ITEM: Share the lightning talk from last May with the digipres group
  • Melanie thinks less lightening talks and a few panel would be a soft expansion of the programming (half-day)
  • Abby: interactivity in addition to the panels and lightning talks - unconference/breakout session based around a theme/birds-of-a-feather
  • Venue options - hosting the symposium in one of the collecting institutions on campus, possibly PCL, check into SAC for more than one calssroom with space, check the new Liberal Arts building
FYI
  • We have a spot reserved for January 20th
  • Melanie: possibly Islandora panel that would be practice run for TCDL 2016 (building things from scratch in house v. contracting)
    • If we do more research upfront (before assessment) we can take a more focused approach in what we contract out of house
  • Possible panel on digital preservation
  • Possibly talk about combined effort to preserve the computing history of the university
