Link previous owners as far back to creation date as possible.Assign either of these

Roles:

• Previous owner: collectors
• Dealer: constituent is a dealer/gallery/agent

Dates

Enter dates of ownership change in Begin ISO date for the beginning of a persons' ownership and End ISO date for the sale/gift date by the owner. Enter an exact date if known, or year. Then click to select the most appropriate Display Date; in most cases that will be the yyyy-yyyy format. You must select or enter a Display Date or this may appear empty in reports. If automated options in Display Date do not meet your needs, you may enter a custom value.

For new acquisitions, prioritize most recent owner prior to accession by BMA. If exact dates of ownership change are not known, enter year estimate and leave notes about the accuracy of the dates in remarks 

(While a text entry type for Provenance is available, it will only be available for reference within TMS. You might use this to explain uncertainty or complications regarding provenance)

Entering Public Provenance

Under acquisition cataloguingsection of the data entry view, you may enter a standardized text of provenance that is approved for public information. For anonymous donors, this is where you might replace the actual constituent name with "Private Collection."

The provenance is listed in chronological order, beginning with the earliest known owner. Life dates, if known, are enclosed in brackets. Uncertain information is indicated by the terms "possibly" or "probably" and explained in footnotes. Dealers, auction houses, or agents are enclosed in parentheses to distinguish them from private owners. Relationships between owners and methods of transactions are indicated by punctuation: a semicolon is used to indicate that the work passed directly between two owners (including dealers, etc.), and a period is used to separate two owners (including dealers, etc.) if a direct transfer did not occur or is not known to have occurred. Footnotes are used to document or clarify information.
