The AIQ is administered in the patient’s dominant language during the initial session of both pre- and post-therapy assessments. It is also administered at the six-month follow-up and the twelve-month folloBeing natural and supportive of the person is absolutely keywfollow-up.

Administering the AIQ prior to any other tests is crucial because:

  • Influence on Responses: Other assessments that may be challenging for the patient could influence their responses. If a patient experiences difficulty or frustration with other tests, it may impact their emotional state and willingness to engage in the AIQ. Frustration can lead to less accurate or less honest responses.

  • Genuine Perspective: By starting with the AIQ, clinicians can obtain a more genuine perspective on the patient’s experiences with aphasia. This approach allows the evaluation to take place without the interference of test fatigue or anxiety from other assessments.

The AIQ-21 has 21 questions and usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. It is divided into three sections: activities, participation, and emotional state/well-being. Each section focuses on different parts of living with aphasia.

To make it easier to understand, the questions use a repetitive format and include pictures for responses. This design helps reduce the cognitive load, making it simpler for participants. In each section, individuals choose images that they feel represent themselves, with options showing different races and genders. These choices are then turned into scores for each section, allowing a better understanding of how aphasia affects their lives.

Administration of the Communication Component of the AIQ for Emotionally Sensitive Patients

For patients who are emotionally sensitive and may find the other components of the Aphasia Impact Questionnaire (AIQ) overwhelming, only the first six questions, which comprise the communication component, should be administered. This approach ensures that the assessment remains focused on key aspects of communication while prioritizing the patient’s emotional well-being.

Clinicians should consider this modification when patients display signs of distress or express concerns about completing the entire questionnaire. It is essential to document the reason for limiting the scope of the AIQ in the patient's records in the comments box.
