New documentation about Endpoint Management

As part of a college-wide communication sent on May 9, 2024, CNS OIT announced that a project to enroll networked computers is underway. To provide our customers with more information and answer the questions we’ve received, we’ve created new documentation on our wiki: Endpoint Management in CNS

New content is being added often, so check back regularly for updates.

If you have any questions, submit an Endpoint Management Questions Help Request to open a ticket directly with our Endpoint Management team.

Using a personal computer for UT work or research? Let us know

If you use your personal computer for UT work, please fill out this form to tell us why: https://cloud.wikis.utexas.edu/wiki/spaces/cnsoitpublic/embed/135792907

As part of the Endpoint Management work described above, CNS OIT is collaborating with CNS leadership to address the use of personal computers for UT work. This information is so we can design a solution to meet your needs and will not be used against you.

Moving offices or labs? Contact CNS OIT for network access

Submit a Network Connectivity Help Request to open a ticket directly with our CNS OIT Networking team. Let us know where you’re moving from, where you’re moving to, and how many devices will be connecting to ethernet in your new location.

We’ll do our best to make sure the networking is ready for you and you’re back online once your devices are moved.

Update your computer to remain compliant and avoid quarantine

If you’ve been traveling or off campus during the summer, there’s a chance your computer hasn’t remained up to date. To avoid being quarantined by the Information Security Office when you return to campus, take some time to make sure your computer’s operating system and applications are up to date.

For more information about how to update your computer and why staying up to date is important, see our page here: Restart and Update Your Computer: FAQs

Networking: wall ports that aren’t being used will be switched to General Networks

Beginning July 30, 2024 CNS OIT will be reviewing network logs to identify wall ports that have not had a device connected in the last 120 days. These unused ports will then be switched to General Networks to make sure they connect to our default secure network. We do not plan on disabling any wall ports.

General Networks is the primary network on campus. You may be most familiar with its wireless form: the utexas WiFi. The same way you need to use your EID to connect to the utexas WiFi from a new device, the same is true for wired General Networks.

Will you be impacted? Probably not. If you haven’t been on campus since March 26th, then your ethernet port may now be connected to General Networks. To get connected, follow the instructions on this Knowledge Base article: Connecting to Wired General Networks

While very unlikely, it’s possible for an error to result in a wall port being switched to General Networks unintentionally.

If you’re unable to get online and you’ve tried following the steps in the knowledge article linked above, please submit a Network Connectivity Help Request to open a ticket directly with our CNS OIT Networking team.

This is part of bi-annual maintenance performed by our networking team that helps secure our networks and maintain network access for our customers.
