❓ Problem statement

Controls is tasked with creating a list of requirements and components for the Pedals Daughter Board. We need to come up with a design that accommodates for the PST-360, Hall-Effect Through-Shaft Rotary Position Sensor.

💡 Research insights

The hall effect sensor is a non contact sensor based solely on magnetic sensors that generate electrical signals proportional to the magnetic field applied.

This senor can produce analog or digital signal depending on the circuit design. The main difference between the two signals is that the circuit for the Digital Output Sensor includes a Schmitt Trigger whereas the Analog Output Sensor does not.

Regardless, the Hall Effect Sensor can used for many applications like current sensing, position detection, and contactless switching.

Lastly, it’s important to realize that its output voltage is proportional to the magnetic field strength.

📊 Solution hypothesis

  • As far as the connection scheme is concerned, there are five different options: Simple, Redundant, Full Redundant, CAN, and SPI connection.

  • We decided to go with Redundant because Redundant systems can handle faults without completely shutting down. This basically means that if one component fails, the system can resort to a backup path which allows the system to continue operating.
