Dynamics Meeting 11/7/2024

NEW DYNAMICS MEETING FORMAT? I want everyone to go to their section of this page and add an image of what they did for LHR throughout the week. During the meeting, we can quickly go over what everyone has done as a progress check. It could be a screenshot of your CAD, code, or just anything you’ve done. It could even just be a photo of your research. My reasoning for this is you get to show the work you’ve done to everyone and as a result, ppl understand the other systems more along with that you have like something you can show on your portfolio as well. We should do a vote on this and see how ppl like it after trying this out once or twice and we can either stick with this or go back to what we had last week.

Great job with the workday, we got a lot done!

  • I would like to see if everyone can be at workday by 9:30, that means no info at the start is missed and we can maximize workday.

One-on-one meetings

I want to have one-on-one meetings just as a casual conversation to talk about how y’all have been feeling about LHR. Anything I can do to help y’all, if y’all are getting what you want out of the org, things of the sort. Only sign up from the 11th to the 15th. Please :D

  • Are you getting what you want out of LHR (technical, social, professional, etc)?

  • Do you feel properly supported by myself, your subsystem lead, and team management? Is leadership approachable?

  • Are you able to balance school, LHR, social life, and personal responsibilities?

  • Are you enjoying your projects and feel that you are learning what you want to learn?

  • What feedback do you have for my leadership style and interaction with members?

  • Do you enjoy the culture of the system and feel like a valued part of the LHR community?

  • Do you think you have too much, too little, or the right amount of workload?

  • Is there anything that can be improved across your subsystem, system, or the team?

Timeline Reminder

Timeline

Andrew

  • did shock research, have a list of potential options so far

  • could use different one in the rear depending on packaging constraints

    • need to figure out packaging constraints

  • looking at ~200-300lb/in spring rate shocks

    • source

    • seems like anything over 300lb would be too stiff?

  • most will cost around $200-$500

Mostly been doing research over how to optimize for bump steer. More info on the confluence page I wrote last week. Seems to be a lot of making sure you have the right tie rod angle and length, not much with equations or doing calcs.

Jonathan

Understanding the forces that are applied on the rear trailing arm and considering designs that could be used as a starting reference point when starting to CAD the rear trailing arm. Still trying to understand the axle diameter ordeal our unsprung group was working on from workday.

Sohan

Code for min axel dia:

  • Apparently not right according to Phillip but he has some input and we r gonna meet tomorrow so after his meeting we can then decide on next steps and ill code it up

Code for brake calcs:

  • Brake calcs are fully done however I need the data sheets from other calipers back from our ops team so I can then see which caliper gives us the smallest horizontal stackup w/ the smallest weight and rotor diameter.

Depending on how much time I have, I'm going to try and make all of these programs an excel sheet at one point since excel is easier for people w/ no programming experience to see, but i lowkey don't like excel since you gotta type in the formals into cells and from an initial glance you cant see the formulas, but its whatever

Sumi

formula i was trying for some calculations:

I feel like the first thing we need to do is have FBDs that actually make sense so I was trying to do that, but it was kind of difficult.

extra research on multi-axial loading and bearing calcs:

Carter

-mostly research this week about bellcrank optimization

-haven’t pirated any kinematics software. Probably won’t

-trying to understand what goes into the motion ratio and what our desired motion ratio should be

-kinda a side project but I’ve started reading through a textbook on modeling vehicle dynamics for the goal of having our own software to model everything in (long term af)

La’akea

Mostly been doing research on pushrods, what kind of loads they experience, why this design is good, etc.

Going to start focusing on composite testing procedures for the pushrods

Oliver

I’ve just been collecting research on staking, retaining rings, and squashing as methods of designing and manufacturing my control arms. Here is a link to my research document. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IdqX6nkDeXx6cVnuxuoVnxBk9VOefx8lJAReDgqMFmE/edit?usp=sharing

Workday Plan

Plan together

Next week Plan

  • @Kayla Lee - working on finalizing front suspension - motion ratio and shock and bellcrank packaging left, if i had a kinematics software it would be ideal to test our dimensions before saying its final. trailing arm is a different story, i will assume it doesnt need to be finalized by the nov deadline.

    • need @Samiksh Medudula and @Evan Zhang to check if my suspension geom sketch is accurate enough where it pertains to steering and unsprung packaging

      • like my kpi angle and caster angle and if it lines up with what steering believes it should be)

      • and unsprung stackup

  • @Evan Zhang -

  • @Samiksh Medudula -

  • @Andrew Chang -

  • @William Lai -

  • @Joshua Palacios -

  • @Sumana Subramanian -

    • Figuring out how multi-axial loading works, understand static loading on the axle in order to find minimum diameter for bearing calcs

    • run FEA on Solidworks

  • @Jonathan Truong -

    • Working with Manas on the rear trailing arm, understanding the split between suspension and unsprung

    • Continue designing the trailing arm in program

    • Axle diameter

  • @Sohan Kureti

    • Using data sheet provided by brembo (whoever we get it), try out diff calipers in the program and see how small we can make the rotor size, then compare that against min thickness to see which one is the least mass. Also need to see the dimensions of these calipers as a smaller rotor would not be ideal if the horizontal stackup increases a good amount.

    • Also, looking more into min dia for the axel, testing different materials, making the program and the equations / logic behind it right. Also then adapting that for a hollow axle and seeing the weight differences.

  • @Carter Peeler -

  • @La'akea Lancial -

  • @Oliver Ludington -

  • @Manas Jain -

Goals for myself

  • Help steering with steering optimization

  • Help figure out axle calcs for unsprung
