The number of levels of review is defined by the candidate’s college or school:

  • In departmentalized colleges and schools, the candidate is evaluated at a minimum of five independent levels:

(1) budget council or executive committee (BC/EC) for the department,

(2) department chair,

(3) college/school advisory committee (CAC),

(4) dean, and

(5) president’s review committee.

  • In non-departmentalized colleges and schools, the candidate is evaluated at a minimum of three
    independent levels:

(1) budget council or executive committee (BC/EC)for college/school,

(2) dean, and

(3) president’s review committee.

Candidates holding a joint appointment of at least 30% must be reviewed simultaneously in the units corresponding to both the primary and joint appointments (Section D.4).

Candidates holding a joint appointment of less than 30% are only reviewed in the academic unit corresponding to the primary appointment. Similarly, candidates holding courtesy appointment(s) are reviewed only in the academic unit corresponding to the primary appointment. However, the dean or department chair corresponding to the primary academic unit, or the candidate may request a letter from the department chair and/or dean corresponding to the joint and/or courtesy appointments to evaluate the faculty member’s contributions to that unit (Section G.4).

The president of the University of Texas at Austin makes the final decision on promotion from tenured associate professor to tenured professor. The president also makes the final recommendation on promotion and tenure for tenure-track candidates. Tenure recommendations are subject to approval by the UT System Board of Regents.
