The number of levels of review are defined by the candidate’s college or school:

  • In departmentalized colleges and schools, the candidate is evaluated at a minimum of five independent levels:

(1) budget council or executive committee for department (BC/EC),

(2) department chair,

(3) college/school advisory committee (CAC),

(4) dean, and

(5) president’s review committee.

  • In non-departmentalized colleges and schools, the candidate is evaluated at a minimum of three
    independent levels:

(1) budget council or executive committee for college/school (BC/EC),

(2) dean, and

(3) president’s review committee.

Candidates with joint appointments must be reviewed simultaneously in the units corresponding to both the primary and joint appointments (Section D.4). While candidates with courtesy appointments are not reviewed in the units corresponding to the courtesy appointment, the reviewing unit or the candidate may request a letter to document their contributions to that unit (Section G.4).

The president of the University of Texas at Austin makes the final decision on promotion from tenured associate professor to tenured professor. The president also makes the final recommendation on promotion and tenure for tenure-track candidates. Tenure recommendations are subject to approval by the UT System Board of Regents.
