The rules and regulations governing official UT travel are created by the Federal Government (the IRS), the State of Texas, and UT departments.

This is a summary of UT's travel policies. A slideshow with more information can be viewed here. A full account of travel regulations can be found in the Handbook of Business Procedures, Part 11.


RTA - Requests for Travel Authorization

All business-related absences from campus of more than a half day must be authorized via an RTA. This is true whether or not the trip is funded by UT.

Special approval is required for:

  • Travel to Washington D.C.
  • Foreign Travel
  • Non-Employee Travel


Travel Authorization Rules

All UT travel must be authorized prior to departure.

Travel for UT business cannot be reimbursed until the travel is authorized.
