Pertaining to online exams administered via learning module test modes
Resolved/soon to be so:
- Quest logged student out due to “inactivity”, while student was working on scratch paper.
We believe this is solved and any remaining 'timed out' messages is due to the amount of time actually running dry. Please do let us know (questhelp@austin.utexas.edu) if you see cases where errant timeout messages are occurring.
- Make dynamic countdown timer visible to students.
Great idea, in the works, we hope to have something out soon (mid June?).
Under consideration:
- It would be great if in a future version, that students could change the answers after entering them (or at least put in preliminary answers that are saved and then submit everything at the end).
-"I should be able to look through every question on the test without previous answer choices being forgotten."-student
-Along these lines--having buttons reading something like: "[Back] [Save and Continue] [Save] [Continue without saving]" could help mitigate issues from students not reading directions
-(why is this important? --) "Students may want to recheck their work and realize that they have made a mistake before the end of the exam. In this case, they should be able to change their answers. Of course, the new answer may be incorrect but it should be their choice."
It is really not ideal for students to wait until they are sure of their answer before submitting them since it is possible that they may run out of time. Permitting them to change their answers after the submission will help them avoid rushing and making mistakes unnecessarily.
Teaching students to fully check their work before clicking the submit answer button, and stressing to them that at that point their response is immutable is recommended at this time. This issue has been documented and will be considered for action during summer 2020.

FAQ:
- How can my students see their grades?
Right now, it's a bit buried on student view–grades, online tests (or learning module, whichever is most relevant), in the section. However, by taking the assignment out of test mode students can see their grades on their initial page within a class.
- What about solutions? Are they posted? Not?
The default behavior for test mode is to not release solutions. Right now there is a bug and solutions aren't displaying at all; we're working on it and hope to have a fix out soon.
Student facing
- Are units needed on numeric free response?
No, if entering in anything but numbers it will be counted incorrect (even if correct)
- Can students review and change their submissions after clicking 'submit answer', like they can on a bubblesheet?
No, once students have clicked the blue 'submit answer' button and gotten confirmation 'your answer has been received' it is immutable.
- Can I wait and submit all my answers at the end?
That approach is really not recommended, although yes, it is possible. The timer cutoff is not well signposted and one could easily lose points from not entering answers in that you are all prepared to. Quest staff is usually available at the start of exams for monitoring and troubleshooting as well, as we have a vested interest in ensuring all goes smoothly.
