Resetting (Resyncing) Message Waiting Indication

Occasionally, the message-waiting light on your phone may become out of sync with the database in the telephone switch. The light

may stay on even though you have no unplayed messages in your mailbox.  The simplest way to remedy this is to restart your phone:

Polycom Sets

  • Leave the phone hung up, and press the Menu button.
  • Press 3 for Settings.
  • Press 1 for Basic.
  • Press 8 for Restart Phone.
  • Press the Yes button on the Confirmation screen.

After restarting the phone, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Network is down."  This is normal.  The restart process typically only takes 30-60 seconds.

Avaya Sets

  • Leave the phone hung up, and press the Services button.
  • Press 4 for Check for Updates.
  • Press the Yes button on the Confirmation screen.

The phone will resync with the telephone switch and restart in about a minute.

Turning Off Message Waiting Indication

To permanently turn off message-waiting indication on your phone–especially useful if you are forwarding all of your messages to email and listening to them there–log in by web browser (voicemail.its.utexas.edu) and click Notification, then click Activate Notification.  In the “Notify me through Message Wait Indicator,” select the Off button.

IMPORTANT:  This will not turn off message-waiting indication for previous messages, so you will need to go into the Mailbox and play all messages.  (They don’t have to be played in their entirety, but each one must be opened.)
