General information

Full-time faculty members may request modified instructional duties (MID) for one long session semester (i.e. fall or spring) when certain personal circumstances prevent them from being able to perform their classroom teaching duties, and when such modifications are found to be in the interest of the University's instructional programs.

MID is not a leave, does not stop the probationary clock, and modifies the faculty member's normal classroom teaching duties with non-instructional work as outlined in HOP 2-2240 Modified Instructional Duties

Faculty who are approved for MID are not removed from the instructional budget, and are expected to continue to fulfill all of their other duties as members of the faculty during the period of modification. MID does not require a Faculty Request for Leave form or adjustment in Workday.

Where justified, a tenure-track faculty member may make a separate request for an extension of the probationary period.

This policy is not intended to apply to situations where use of sick leave is appropriate.

Process

1) Before beginning, review HOP 2-2240: Modified Instructional Duties and EVPP: Modified Instructional Duties for detailed guidance and instructions.

2) Faculty members must submit a request for modification of instructional responsibilities in writing to their department chair. The application must include (1) a statement explaining the need for modified instructional responsibilities; and (2) a written proposal describing in detail what work the faculty member will do in place of the applicant’s normal classroom responsibilities. This work may involve significant scholarly research, new course development, curriculum development, or other work done in the best interest of the university’s instructional program. The proposal must define a work product and must propose a method for evaluation of the work by the department chair or dean during the semester.

3) The department chair should review the request following the guidance in HOP 2-2240: Modified Instructional Duties, section F., "Application Review," and if approved, should forward the request along with an accompanying memo of support to the Dean with a cc to the Office of the Dean EA.

4) Within thirty days of receipt of the request, the dean shall submit the results of his or her review, in writing, as well as the Chair's letter and the requesting faculty's original letter, to the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. Upon final review, the Provost will communicate his or her written decision to the applicant and the appropriate dean and/or department chair. The decision of the Provost is final.

5) Provost replies to the Dean, and the Dean notifies the department of the decision whether to grant the MID.
