Welcome to the Sanger team!  The Sanger Learning Center is an Undergraduate College (UC) unit.  For more than 70 years, the Sanger Learning Center has evolved to match the changing learning needs of UT Austin students. Our varied programming requires a significant degree of specialization and staff expertise.  Professional staff members hold advanced degrees in mathematics, history, biology, speech communication, educational psychology, marine science, molecular and cellular biology, English, and adult education.  Our agency’s enduring objective is to help UT Austin students reach their highest potential in personal, career, and academic development.

Our Mission

We empower students to achieve academic and professional goals by providing holistic learning support.

Goals

To help students become effective learners.
To promote help-seeking behavior.
To provide professional development opportunities that prepare students for lives beyond the university.

To fulfill our mission, the Sanger Learning Center provides various services and resources for course support and study effectiveness, including content-based discussion sections and classes, peer tutoring, peer mentoring, professional meetings, and workshops.

The Sanger Learning Center operates from Jester Residential Hall (JES) with four primary support teams: Course Support and Instruction, Academic Counseling Tutorial Services, Public Speaking & Outreach and Math Refreshers and Reviews.  Each unit is organized around the program teams’ concept. Each team is led by a Program Coordinator who reports to the Sanger Learning Center’s Director and administers all aspects of their programs.

  1. Course Support and Instruction (CSI) area programs are tied to specific historically difficult courses, meet with groups of student participants, and plan instructional events over multiple time points in a semester.
  2. Academic Counseling Tutoring Services area includes Peer Academic Coaching (PAC), Learning Specialist appointments, and Tutoring Instruction delivered to groups of students or one-on-one. All programs in the academic counseling area emphasize study skills that will benefit students across multiple courses and disciplines.
  3. Public Speaking & Outreach area includes the Public Speaking Center and Outreach. The Public Speaking Center concentrates on the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively to an audience, which has been tied to success in the university years and beyond. The Outreach team presents workshops across campus to individual classrooms, student organizations, and student success programs.
  4. Math Refreshers and Reviews are designed to support student success in calculus courses. Offered at the beginning of each semester, refreshers provide a series of classroom meetings designed to strengthen students’ calculus prerequisite knowledge and skills. Exam reviews at mid- and end-of-semester are designed to provide thoughtful and strategic problem-solving practice just-in-time.

While the teams act independently in administering their program responsibilities, each team member spends considerable time and energy communicating and collaborating with students, staff members, and other stakeholders across campus.
