Top Shell Discussion

1 part topshell

2 part topshell

1 part topshell

2 part topshell

bottom shell flange

airfoil

Pros

  • force distribution a little bit lower

Cons

  • layup for 1 part is harder

  • you could get worse surface finish

    • mylar is hard

  • we have to figure out array wiring

  • dealing with part interaction is harder

  •

  • we dont know how to manufacture it

  • CNC would be hard

  • hotwire is very difficult

  •

  • would it look like the airfoil one but in 2 parts?

  • You have to have fence latches attaching to all parts

  • How does the force on this one compare to the force of 2 part top shell?

  • We could manufacture it in 2 parts

Decisions

  • 2 part topshell very likely

  • top profile cuts around the canopy curve

  • middle profile cuts around the bottom shell curve

  • juice aint worth the squeeze for a double curve

Final Thoughts

  • The main reason to do a 2 part top shell is since manufacturing the 1 part top shell is going to suck, since cobonding with nomex honeycomb can lead to core being crushed and dimples.

  • The main reason NOT to do a 2 part top shell is since having 2 parts instead of one leads to more part interactions, and those have always sucked. Also having 2 parts is more inconvenient

  • We are going with 2 part top shell since the pro of easier manufacturing outweighs the
