Introduction: Background and Problem Statement

The overall goal of the project was to create an exoskeleton that would augment grip and control of the hand.We were introduced to this project by one of the clients that visited our class on the first day, Paul Horton. Paul mentioned how he didn’t have full strength and motion in his hand and we saw this as a fitting challenge and opportunity for us to work on a device that would allow him to achieve his goal of grabbing and then crushing a Styrofoam cup. Throughout the semester, we worked towards a device that would essentially help anyone wearing it to close and open their hand with input from a sensor. In the process we also realized that the exoskeleton could be used for rehabilitation purposes for patients who have limited or no motion in their fingers.
