Background Information
Pressure sores are chronic wounds caused by prolonged pressure applied to a specific area of the body where the sore develops due to patient’s recumbent position for extended periods of time. Normally, communication between the central nervous system and the body allows for the detection of these elevated pressure points which results a person subconsciously shifting his or her body weight around. However, patient populations such as paraplegics or quadriplegics or patients with severe neurologic disorders are at high risk from this condition because they often develop sores known as Ischial Tuberosity due to their neurological incapacity to detect elevated pressure at specific parts of their bodies. Furthermore to worsen the situation, having little to no arm strength, quadriplegics cannot physically lift themselves off their chairs to shift their body weight on their own.
