Browse
You can browse through collections and digital assets stored in the DAMS similarly to going through folders and files on a computer disk. Please note though that this is an analogy, the DAMS collections are not really folders and the digital assets are not really files.
On the start page (https://dams.lib.utexas.edu/), you will see the Top Level Collections available in the DAMS, grouping content along organizational and thematic focal points. Each Top Level Collection has its own namespace for the PIDs of assets stored underneath a Top Level Collection (see Glossary: Namespace). The namespace prefix in an asset's PID indicates which Top Level Collection an asset belongs to. The PID utlmisc:f584473c-d43f-4436-9ddc-b74b039b2682 for instance is for a digital asset in the Miscellaneous collection.
Below the level of the Top Level Collections you can browse sub-collections and digital assets by clicking on the respective folder symbol or preview thumbnail. Click on the "Details" link within a collection/sub-collection to see a collection-level description.
Sub-collections and digital assets can be sorted by title and other metadata associated with the collection or asset.

Date Created/Issued | dateCreated[@keyDate="yes"] or dateIssued[@keyDate="yes"] | The available MODS metadata element with attribute "keyDate" is fed into Solr field mods_keydate_sort_s, which is used for sorting. |
Date Ingested | N/A | The ingest date is generated automatically upon creating/adding a collection or asset. The date value is stored in Solr field fgs_createdDate_dt. |

Search
Basic Search
The Basic Search function allows you to search for a keyword across a predefined set of metadata fields available in the Solr index (e.g. title, subject, description, contributor, date, format, rights, full text). In the current DAMS implementation, a collection namespace can be selected to limit the search space.

List of Solr fields searched with the Basic Search function. The weight is a factor that helps establishing the order of items in the results list, if a search term matches data in a Solr field with a higher weight, the respective Solr entry will be ranked higher in the results list.

Advanced Search
The Advanced Search function allows you to select specific metadata fields in the Solr index for a search, including a combination of search queries. With the advanced search, complex search queries can be constructed to limit the search space.
- Click on the "Advanced Search" link to access the search form.
- The "Field" dropdown menu allows you to select a metadata field to be searched for keywords entered in the "Search terms" form field.
- If you want to construct a complex search query, add another fieldset by clicking on the button labeled with the Plus sign.
- You can use the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT to combine the partial search queries.

Search results display
The search results pages list all matches to either Basic or Advanced Search queries. As a default, the search results are ordered by Relevancy, which is determined by the Solr server's ranking configuration.
- In order to sort the search results by a different parameter, click on one of the options in the grey box labeled "Sort options" at the top of the page.
- Click on the orange arrow symbol next to the selected sorting option to reverse the sort order.
For each entry in the results list, the DAMS will display a preview thumbnail and a selection of metadata fields.

Search results export
The list of search results can be exported in tabular form as a CSV file (comma-separated values). The resulting file will have one column for each metadata field that is displayed in the search results list (Asset PID, Title, Contributor, Date Created, Resource Type, Date Ingested, File Name, In DAMS Collection (PID), Source Collection, Repository).
- Click on the spreadsheet file icon on the right side of the screen, below the grey box with sort options for the search results.
- The DAMS will prepare an export file for download, which can take a few moments. Once the export file is ready for download, a green message box will appear at the top of the page. Click on the download link in the message and save the export file.
