Small Grants Program - College of Education

The College of Education Small Grants Program (SGP) provides funding for College of Education tenure-track/tenured and research faculty to conduct pilot projects and/or expand existing research. The purpose of the SGP is to support research that will serve as the basis for the submission of an external grant proposal. Funds from this grant can be used for research materials, supplies, and equipment (e.g., participant incentives, photocopying/scanning surveys, computers, etc.), hourly graduate and non-graduate research assistants, research/grant consultants, software, and travel for data gathering and research collaboration. Note that travel to conferences is not supported by the SGP funding. (See List of Allowable Expenses on page 2 of the "Small Grants Program RFP" document below.)
There are two levels of awards: Level 1 (up to $5,000) and Level 2 ($5,000-$10,000), both of which support similar types of projects and vary only in scope of funding. Tenure-track and tenured faculty in the College of Education are eligible to apply, but faculty can only be awarded one SGP Award in a two-year period.
Application Materials
To apply for an SGP Award, submit the following (using Times New Roman font size 12 with no less than one-inch borders):
1) Project proposal that is no longer than three single-spaced pages (references are not included in the page count),
2) Detailed, itemized project budget with justification where necessary. Please work with COERA staff to develop the budget. (See List of Allowable Expenses),
3) 4-page CV highlighting relevant research publications and funding
The proposal should include a title and outline the project rationale and significance, research questions, and a research plan that clearly specifies the methods and methodology, as well as the short-term and long-term goals and products of the proposed project (e.g., grant proposals – which must include the intended granting agency, peer-reviewed articles, etc.). Successful proposals will outline a clearly defined, well justified and feasible project that will either help lead to the submission of a proposal for specified (in the proposal) external funding or provide support for research complementary to existing external funding.
Note: If you have funding for a research project that is similar to the one for which you are applying for SRA funding, provide a brief explanation regarding how the SRA project differs from your existing funded project. Moreover, if you have other college-provided funds (e.g., start-up funds), please use those funds for your research prior to applying for a Small Grant.
All application materials must be submitted as a single PDF here: https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dm7QLyG4s8l4Bz8 no later than October 13, 2023 at 5 pm. IRB approval is required for human subjects research, where applicable. Successful applicants will be required to submit a summary report detailing research results. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of November. Funding will begin January 1, 2024 and end August 31, 2025. No extensions beyond Aug. 31, 2025 will be granted.
