Installing Software: TXLAW Account
When you need to install software on your laptop or home desktop you will have to use the TXLAW account that was provided to you.
You can access your password for this account from Stache. https://stache.security.utexas.edu/
DO NOT use this account unless you are absolutely sure about the safety and security of the software you are about to install or run. If you have unexpectedly received a prompt to enter an administrative account, do not allow the software to run unless you are positive the software is safe.
DO NOT use the administrator account for everyday work or to browse the internet.
DO NOT share your password. See Acceptable Use Policy
For more information
See why UT's Information Security Office does not want people using an administrative account for everyday use.
How to Not Login as Administrator (and still get your job done)
Step-by-step guide
In this example software is trying to run and requesting an administrative account.
STOP
If you do not recognize the software that wants to run, click NO.As this point if you are sure it is safe to run the software, you would enter your TXLAW credentials stored in Stache.
When you enter the .\ (dot slash) before TXLAW the domain changes from AUSTIN to the name of the computer. If the domain still says Austin, the login will be rejected.Note
For security purposes, each device has its own unique password and should remain that way. When you log into stache to lookup your password, make sure you're looking at the correct one in case you have multiple devices.
- Click Yes and the software will proceed.
The following may be rarely needed
In the rare instance that the above does not work and you NEED to login with an administrative account you can do the following.
- From the log on screen, choose Other user.
- In the User name field, type in .\TXLAW
Enter the TXLAW password for this device and sign in.
As soon as you are done with what you needed to do, sign out and log back in with your EID user account.
