CARE Counselor

The SOA has a dedicated Counselor in Residence (CARE Counselor), Lauren Sanchez.

The CARE Counselor is available to help with a variety of issues, such as stress, test anxiety, racing thoughts, feeling unmotivated, and anything else that might be getting in your students’ way.

CARE Counseling at the School of Architecture

THREE ways for students to contact Lauren:

  • Leave a message with your EID at  512.471.3115

  • Call the CMHC at 512.471.3515 and ask for a CARE appointment with Lauren

  • Walk-In Office hour, Wednesdays from 1-2 – SUT 2.126A

Individual Counseling Services

  • Meet with a student to assess mental health needs and discuss treatment options. (no charge)

  • Individual counseling sessions, typically with a six-session limit. Students with significant barriers to services and high acuity may receive additional sessions.

  • This is a FREE session for students. Students incur a $25 charge for not showing up to an individual counseling session or for giving less than 24 hours’ notice before cancelling.

  • Fees show on What I Owe as “health services charge”.

  • Students may pay on the date of service at student financial services to avoid the charge going on What I Owe.

  • The counseling center will work out payment plans with students who have financial barriers.

  • Case management: this is meeting with a student to assess their resources and help them find assistance in the community. (no charge)

Referrals

If you think a student might benefit from meeting with a counselor:

  • Let them know that there is someone in the college who works with students and that you would like to make a referral.

Consultations

  • For an urgent consultation regarding a student in crisis, knock on Lauren’s door in SUT 2.126A. Please interrupt if it is urgent. For other consultations, Lauren can be reached at 512.471.3115.

  • If you are concerned about a student, please call Lauren or email to set up a time to talk. Due to HIPPA considerations please do NOT email Lauren identifying information.

  • If you are unable to reach Lauren, walk the student to the Counseling and Mental Health Center, 5th floor SSB. Let them know you are coming at 512.471-3515.
