Performing Large Restorations

The .zip file restore and the web restore both have a limit of 250 MB and are unsuited to the task when you have gigabytes of data to restore for a user. Normally, you should have the user log in to the Crashplan desktop client and restore the files that way (see: How to Restore files from UTBackup) but what if the user no longer works for UT or is otherwise unable to provide their EID password? Here is a procedure that you, as a TSC, can follow that will let you restore large amounts of data.

  1. Locate a non-LDAP org within your department's org that you have access to. If you do not have a non-LDAP org, you can create one and contact the UTBackup Service Admins and ask them to disable LDAP authentication for you.
  2. Move the user's account to that non-LDAP org by finding the user and choosing Change Organization from the Action menu.
  3. Choose the non-LDAP org from the list of organizations and click the Move button.
  4. After the user has been moved to the non-LDAP org, choose Edit User from the Action menu.
  5. Set a new password and click Update User.
  6. Install UTBackup on a new computer and log in using the user's EID and the password you just set in step 5.

  7. Restore files as usual. It is highly recommended that you be on a wired ethernet connection on the UT Austin campus.

  8. When restoration is complete, move the user back to their original org following steps 2 and 3 above. Their password will be reset back to their EID password.
