Probationary Employees and New to Position

General information

As part of the selection and hiring process, all classified staff who are either new to the university, or are returning to the university after a break in service are considered probationary employees for their first 180 days of university employment. Classified staff who are new to a unit, but not to university employment, should also be evaluated at regular intervals, following the guidelines below.

Evaluating staff who are new to the University

It is recommended that managers conduct performance reviews after 45, 90, and 135 days for each probationary employee they supervise, using either format of the "Probationary Review" form linked in the "HR Forms" section below, with the goal of reviewing unit goals, position expectations, and assessing performance. Managers should notify employees when their performance is below acceptable standards.
