Instructions for Classroom Technology in Winship

UPDATE 08/22/2022: This wiki is still accurate for general instructions on how to use the technology in classrooms. There are a few new rooms/systems that we will be adding in the future.

Audio-Visual Classroom Instructional Technology is installed in Winship 1.108, 1.114, 1.130, 1.134, 1.138, 1.148, 1.164, 1.172 (audio only), 2.112, 2.116 and 2.120 (audio only), 2.136 and 2.138 and B.202 (upgrade in process due to The Flood),.

If you have any questions, or would like a tutorial on using the technology in any of the classrooms in Theatre and Dance, please contact the Media Support Services Office in WIN 2.114, (512) 232-5305.

Instructions for Technology Classrooms with a Touch Screen (series 2) - WIN 1.108, 1.164 and 2.112:

  1. Request a key to open the doors and/or drawers to the media console (WIN 1.108 and 1.164 only) to access the instructional technology from the Media Support Services (AV) Office in Winship 2.114: (512) 232-5305.
  2. Touch the Touch Panel on top of the console to awaken it.
  3. Touch System Power On "button" on the Touch Panel to start projector (please wait a minute for it to "warm up").
  4. Touch the “button” of the component you wish to use located on the bottom of the touch screen.
  5. To use the MacMini computer in the console, log-in with your UTEID (don’t shut down the computer OR forget to log out when you are done).
  6. To use a portable computer, connect using the video and audio cables on top of the cabinet.
    1. Connect the HDMI cable, Display Port Adaptor, or VGA cable to the port on your laptop.
    2. Connect the audio cable to the Headphone port on your computer if playing audio.
  7. Use the MacMini to play a DVD (region 1 only). A VHS-tape Player is no longer available on new Digital Systems, nor is a stand-alone DVD player.
  8. Touch System Power Off “button” on the Touch Panel to turn projector off, then touch "yes, I’m done".

 

Instructions for Technology Classrooms with a Touch Screen (series 3) - WIN 1.134, 1.138 and 1.148:

  1. Request a key to open the doors and drawers to media console (WIN 1.134, 1.148) to access the instructional technology from the Media Support Services (AV) Office in Winship 2.114: (512) 232-5305.
  2. Touch the Touch Panel on top of the console to awaken it.
  3. Touch System Power On "button" on the Touch Panel to start projector (please wait a minute for it to "warm up").
  4. Touch the “button” of the component you wish to use located on the bottom of the touch screen.
  5. To use the MacMini computer in the console, log-in with your UTEID (don’t shut down the computer OR forget to log out when you are done).
  6. To use a portable computer, connect using the video and audio cables on top of the cabinet.
    1. Connect the HDMI cable, Display Port Adaptor, or VGA cable to the port on your laptop.
    2. Connect the audio cable to the Headphone port on your computer if playing audio.

  8. To use AirMedia (wireless presentation in 1.138 and 1.148) with a laptop, type in the IP address displayed on the projection screen into a web browser and follow instructions.
  9. To use AirMedia (wireless presentation in 1.138 and 1.148) with a tablet or phone, download the Crestron AirMedia app, launch and follow instructions. Note: AirMedia does not officially support playing videos. That doesn't mean it won't play videos, but it does mean it's not supported if it doesn't play videos.
  10. Touch System Power Off “button” on the Touch Panel to turn projector off, then touch "yes, I’m done".


Instructions for Technology Classrooms without a Touch Screen - WIN 2.138:

2.138 does not have a touch panel, so the switcher with push buttons is in the cabinet with the components:

  1. Hold down the green Display Power button, also labeled PWR, for two seconds to turn on the projector.
  2. Press the button labeled with the component you wish to use (DOC for Document Camera, LAP for Laptop, MAC for the Mac computer, DVD for the DVD player, VHS for the VHS player). Control audio volume with the knob labeled VOL.
  3. To use the MacMini computer (WIN 1.148 only), log in with your UTEID. Don’t shut down the computer OR forget to log-out when you are done!
  4. To use a portable computer, connect using the video and audio cables on top of the cabinet. You will need a VGA adaptor to connect an Apple computer and newer PC's.
    1. A VGA port in your computer will look like this: 
    2. Connect the audio cable to the Headphone port on your computer if playing audio.
  5. The remotes to control the DVD and VHS players are in the media cabinet. Use the DVD player OR the MacMini to play a DVD (region 1 only).
  6. Hold down the green Display Power button for two seconds to turn off the projector.

Instructions for Technology Classrooms with a HDTV Flat Screen (Winship 1.114, 1.130 and eventually B.202):

  1. There are two ways to use the flat screens in these rooms:
    1. Using the flat screen to display content on your laptop
      1. To do this, you need to connect your computer directly to the the flat screen just as you do with the projectors in 2.112, B.202, etc. EXCEPT that instead of VGA input, it is HDMI
        1. If you are using a Mac, you will most likely need to use the white HDMI adapter connected to the black HDMI cable (only the newest Mac models have HDMI ports); the adapter is connected to the cable with a lock, so it should always be available for your use
          1. The adapter looks like this: 
        2. Not all PCs will have an HDMI input, so you need to check this beforehand to know if you will be able to plug in directly (i.e. directly with the black HDMI cable and without the white Mac adapter; if they are connected, simply pull them apart to connect your laptop). If your PC does not have an HDMI port, you will need to use the Mac mini (see below).
        3. An HDMI port in your laptop will look like this: 
    2. Using the Mac mini connected to the flat screen (it's mounted between the screen and the wall)
      1. To do this, you need a wireless keyboard and mouse that is synced with the Mac mini
        1. These can be checked out through the Media Support Services (AV) Office in Winship 2.114: (512) 232-5305
      2. You will need to log in using your UT EID and password, just as you do with any other campus computer.
