Overview

The Master of Science in Information Technology & Management (MSITM) is a 10-month, STEM-designated degree that utilizes cutting-edge curriculum to address the changing landscape of businesses and career opportunities. It develops foundational skills in emerging technologies and problem-solving.

The MD/MSITM dual degree will produce physicians who can be leaders in addressing business challenges where medicine intersects with advancements such as blockchain, IoT, and machine learning. Students develop the skills needed to contribute to innovative solutions in diagnostics, data analytics, and precision medicine as big data and AI play an increasingly vital role in healthcare.

The program offers a comprehensive curriculum of technical knowledge, business acumen, and strategic management, focusing on areas such as data analytics, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and digital innovation.

Students will be trained to apply these technologies in real-world scenarios, understanding the implications of IT management on business operations and decision-making processes.

Students who receive the MSITM will be well prepared to lead and innovate at the intersection of technology and business, driving digital transformation across industries.

They will understand how to leverage emerging technologies to solve complex business problems, manage IT projects, and create strategic plans that align with organizational goals.

Unique skillsets developed in this dual degree include advanced data analytics, machine learning applications in healthcare, blockchain implementation, strategic IT management, and the ability to translate medical needs into technological solutions.

Curriculum

Students in the MSITM program must complete 36 hours of required coursework, as outlined in the table below. This includes 29 hours of core courses and 7 credit hours of electives, chosen from a prescribed list and approved by a program advisor. The Capstone course is required of all students and is an opportunity to work with real-world companies to build systems utilizing technologies learned in the MSITM curriculum.

Degree Format

The MSITM program is a full-time, 10-month, on-campus program that begins in July and ends in May. Students will take 6 credit hours in the Summer Term, 15 credit hours in the Fall Term, and 15 credit hours in the Spring Term.

The MD and MSITM degrees will be awarded simultaneously once coursework for both degrees is complete.

Application Instructions

Prerequisites

Before starting your application, review program prerequisites and suggested skillset to determine if you're on the right path for the MSITM degree. Students are required to have a programming and database background prior to joining the program.

In order to apply for the MD/MSITM dual degree program, students must be in good academic standing at Dell Medical School.

  1. Visit the McCombs Application portal to complete the online application.

  2. Select Start New Application and choose Texas MS IT & Management from the list.

  3. Complete the application.

    1. On the Educational Information page, you will need to upload unofficial transcripts for all higher educational institutions listed. You will not need to upload any official transcripts. However, you will need to present an official transcript of your first two years at Dell Medical School. Once the Graduate School receives your application, they will bill you for your UT Austin transcript. The bill will show up in your MyStatus Portal.

  4. Once your application has been submitted, regularly check your Application Checklist in the McCombs Application portal and MyStatus Portal to ensure all materials are received.

  5. Once your application is complete, the MSITM Admissions committee will review it in the order received.

  6. Notification of admittance will arrive by email and the McCombs Application portal.

  7. After you are admitted, you must complete the Enrollment Decision Form in the McCombs Application portal as well as the Application Decision Form in the MyStatus Portal.

Graduation

You will not receive certification for your MSITM degree until you graduate from medical school in the following spring semester.
