The CoLA Office of Research & Scholarship (CORS) is committed to supporting our faculty with their research and scholarship efforts. Faculty who are awarded external fellowships that provide dedicated time to conduct research may be eligible for supplemental funding to support their fellowship award via the College of Liberal Arts Co-Sponsored External Fellowships (CSEF).
CSEFs are typically limited to a maximum of 50% of a faculty member’s salary for the award period, regardless of the amount of salary that the external funding covers.
The length and dates of the external fellowship may vary to accommodate the requirements of the granting agency, but fellowships are expected to align with the University’s academic calendar, with a minimum duration of one long semester and maximum duration of one academic year.
There are several overlapping aspects to obtaining a CSEF, including handling of external funding, associated releases from teaching and/or other types of leave from University duties. While this is a CORS research initiative, there are very important components that involve all of the CoLA central teams, including CoLA HR, Finance & Business Affairs, and especially Academic & Faculty Affairs. All of these central teams work together to ensure a successful process when faculty are pursuing external fellowships.
Another important team that is integral to the success of external fellowships is the faculty recipient’s home department.
Fellowships go nowhere without the cooperation of the Department Chair and the assistance of departmental staff, such as a Department or Administrative Manager.
The CORS team recognizes the importance of ensuring that faculty members are working with their departments when stepping through the process of applying for, receiving, and executing external fellowships.
