Level 0 Training

This course reviews essential MRI safety guidelines, sufficient to ensure the trainee may safely enter the MRI control room and observe an MRI study. Level 0 users MAY NOT assume any responsibilities for the e.g. the safety screening of participants and may enter the MRI Control Room (Zone 3) ONLY. Level 0 users MAY NOT enter the MRI Scanner Room (Zone 4) under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES unless they are accompanied by a member of BIC staff or a certified MRI Technologist. Card access to BIC facilities will not be granted.

A maximum of two (2) L0 users may be present for participant research studies – the conduct and safety of the L0 users observing any MRI session will be the responsibility of the Level 2 user overseeing the study.

Level 0 status requires completion of the following:

1) Submit the BIC MRI Training Request form to be logged into our database.

2) Download the Level 0 MRI User Training Packet from the BIC Wiki and complete under the guidance of your PI / supervisor.  You will complete the first page and attach as additional pages to the packet either certificates or screenshots requested for the following sub-steps:

a) For human MRI studies, CITI Human Subjects Protection (HSP) training must be completed, and the user must be named on the study IRB protocol, with a screenshot provided.

    For preclinical MRI studies, ARC training must be completed, and the trainee must be named on the IACUC protocol.

b) Complete the online UTLearn course for MRI Safety Basics:      

                BIC-MRI: 101A   (for our 3T Siemens Skyra system in NHB),

        or     BIC-MRI: 101B   (for our 3T Siemens Vida system in HDB)

                     (Note: For the 7T Bruker preclinical system, either course may be taken.)

c) Complete the MRI Safety Screening form for Personnel: a member of BIC staff will review (sometimes it take a few days: please don't keep submitting duplicates.) Once reviewed, you'll get email confirmation if you screen safe to enter MRI Zone 3.

3) Once step 2) is complete, send to your faculty advisor for their signature.

4) Rename the completed Training Packet as your FIRSTNAME_LASTNAME_L0.pdf .  Submit your L0 MRI User Training Packet to: bic-training@utlists.utexas.edu

BIC will review the packet and will grant Level 0 status providing all requirements have been met.
