Summer Research Award (SRA) - College of Education


Note that the Summer Research Award is different from the Summer Research Assignment, which has been discontinued.

The College of Education Summer Research Award provides one month of summer salary for tenured and tenure-track professors in the College of Education to concentrate on research during the summer. Awards are to be used to for research purposes. Priority will be given to those preparing grant submissions due by the end of fall 2024 and to those working on other major projects due by end of fall 2024 that require dedicated time to accomplish (see below for more information).

Eligibility

Assistant professors are eligible for an SRA after their third year in-rank (i.e., after six long sessions). Faculty who have summer salary (in summer 2024) as part of a College package, were awarded a Research Reboot, FDL or FDA award, or who were awarded a summer research award (SRA) last summer (2023) are not eligible. Applicants must notify their department chairs of submission of an SRA.Return-to-Service Requirement

The recipient is expected to return to normal duties at the University for at least one academic year—Sept. 1 through May 31—following the award. A recipient who elects to leave the university without returning for an academic year is obligated to reimburse the university for funds.

Application Materials

To apply for an SRA Award, submit the following (using Times New Roman font size 12 with no less than one-inch borders). Please submit as a single PDF document:

1) Project proposal that is no longer than three single-spaced pages (references are not included in the page count). Proposal must include a detailed outline of the product of the SRA (e.g., a grant) and the deadline for submission, as well as other details such as book publisher, funding agency, type of grant etc.
2) 4-page CV highlighting relevant research publications and funding.

The proposal should include a title and outline the project rationale and significance, research questions, and a research plan that clearly specifies the methods and methodology, as well as the goals and product of the proposed project. Priority will be given to proposals that outline a clearly defined, well-justified and feasible project that will contribute to the submission of a proposal by the end of fall for external funding or to provide support for a major project also due by the end of fall (e.g., finishing a book). Priority also given to those submitting a book proposal or a grant for the first time and to those submitting to a grant agency/organization to which they have not submitted previously (please make sure to specify this information in your proposal).

Successful applicants will be notified in mid-December for funding in summer 2024. Successful applicants will be required to submit a 1-page brief report detailing research activities to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies by December 15, 2024.
